U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said that preliminary findings suggest the suspect targeted members of Donald Trump’s administration, and that the president himself was also a “likely target.”

Allen is expected to be formally charged today with assaulting a federal officer and using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime, with Blanche announcing that additional federal charges are expected later.

Police confirmed to CBS News, the BBC’s U.S. partner, that the suspect was being held at a city police station in northwest Washington. He is expected to be transferred during the day to a detention center in southeast Washington, D.C.

Trump’s reaction

Less than an hour after the incident, President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social: “The attacker has been arrested.” He later shared a photo showing the suspect’s arrest.
