The report adds that the vote was originally scheduled for today but has been postponed to Saturday.
The draft resolution was submitted by Bahrain at the request of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Der Spiegel reported, citing diplomatic sources.
AP and Reuters state that the draft resolution includes language allowing for the “use of all necessary defensive measures” to secure the passage of commercial ships through the strait.
The United States has supported the proposal, while the Security Council’s permanent veto-holding members—Russia, China, and France—expressed strong reservations.
As a result, the chances of the proposal being adopted are slim, Al Jazeera concludes.
Due to objections from veto-holding states, amendments were made to the draft resolution, so the revised version now states that “all necessary defensive measures” should be available to ensure passage.
Araghchi against the Resolution: “It would only complicate the situation”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned in a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov that adopting a UN Security Council resolution would itself become part of the problem.
He condemned actions by the United States and some countries in the UN Security Council to pressure Iran, emphasizing that “any provocative action by the aggressor and their supporters, including in the UN Security Council, regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, will only complicate the situation,” Tasnim news agency reported today.
Highlighting the Islamic Republic of Iran’s right to legitimately defend its sovereignty, national security, and territorial integrity, Abbas Araghchi strongly condemned aggressive attacks on the country’s infrastructure, including universities, bridges, and scientific centers. Pointing to the “imposed insecurity” in the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said it is the result of military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran.
“Currently, the passage of vessels from countries not involved in military aggression against Iran is being conducted through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the armed forces of the Islamic Republic,” the Iranian foreign minister stated.
