Among those in critical condition are two children, who are being treated in intensive care. Another 48 people remain hospitalized, including three children.

The death toll could rise again in the coming hours, as one of the derailed carriages is “heavily damaged,” said the President of the Andalusia regional government, Juanma Moreno, according to the television network España. One of the deceased is also the train driver.

Most of the injured have been hospitalized at the “Reina Sofía” hospital.

The Andalusian regional government has requested the intervention of the Military Emergency Unit to assist in rescue efforts, and sources from the government delegation confirmed that the military contingent is already on its way to the area.

The accident occurred around 7:45 PM in the town of Adamus, in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, when a train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and fell onto an adjacent track, where a train traveling from Madrid to Huelva was located, causing that train to derail as well.

The accident took place on a section of the railway that was renovated in May of last year, and the train that derailed was “relatively new,” being four years old.

The cause of the derailment is currently unknown.

The mayor of Adamus, Rafael Moreno, was the first to arrive at the scene of the accident, together with the local police. He told El País that he believes the collision between the two trains was not head-on, but a side impact, as he did not see any crushed carriages.

High-speed train traffic between Madrid and Andalusia had to be suspended following the accident, and all trains that were in transit were redirected back to their points of departure.
