Complete collapse: Snow and ice cause chaos across the country; Nearly 500 flights canceled PHOTO/VIDEO
Snow chaos has paralyzed the Netherlands, causing major disruptions to air, rail, and road traffic. Hundreds of flights have been canceled, and trains around Amsterdam have been halted due to heavy snowfall, Reuters reports.
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs, canceled nearly 500 flights this morning. Snow forced the airport to close to all incoming flights until noon, the ANP news agency reported. Aircraft that were scheduled to land in Amsterdam were diverted to other airports.
Problems caused by snow and ice have persisted for days, and since Friday the airport has been forced to cancel hundreds of flights each day.
Rail and road traffic paralyzed
Snow, which covered much of the Netherlands this morning, has also caused chaos on land. Dutch railway company NS confirmed that trains are not running in the greater Amsterdam area, and public transport is in a state of collapse in many other parts of the country.
Ice and snow have caused numerous delays and traffic accidents, prompting authorities to urge people to stay home if possible. According to forecasts, snowfall in the Netherlands is expected to continue throughout the week.
