Lithuania in chaos; Is a state of emergency being declared?
Due to the continuous influx of smuggled balloons disrupting operations at Vilnius Airport, the government plans to declare a state of emergency as a threat to civil safety, Lithuanian Prime Minister’s adviser Ignas Algirdas Dobrovolskas announced today.
“The government is preparing to declare a state of emergency due to a threat to civil safety,” he said, LRT reports.
Due to the danger posed by balloons carrying smuggled goods, Vilnius Airport has been closed multiple times in recent months.
The airspace above the airport was last closed on Wednesday evening, with a particularly intense wave of such balloon activity occurring last weekend.
In response to these incidents, the government decided at the end of October to close the border with Belarus for one month.
However, the border was reopened ahead of schedule to address the situation with carriers stranded in Belarus.
Minsk continues to prevent their return to Lithuania, and the carriers are considering organizing protests.
Faced with what politicians consider a hybrid attack, Lithuania has repeatedly reviewed the current situation in various formats, both at National Security Council meetings and at the international level, LRT reports.
