Terrifying scenes from Brussels: Clashes between police and demonstrators, water cannon and tear gas used

During today’s general strike in Brussels, which police estimated drew around 80,000 participants, clashes broke out between some demonstrators and the police.

Because protesters refused to leave the demonstration site, Brussels police used a water cannon and tear gas to disperse them, reports the Brussels Times.

The police operation resulted in several arrests, and a number of people were injured and received on-site medical assistance.

According to official estimates from the Brussels police, around 80,000 people attended today’s strike, while the unions claim the number of participants was significantly higher, around 140,000.
