Police confirmed that at least 15 people were killed a day earlier in Gujranwala district and surrounding villages, the Associated Press reports.

Meteorologists have announced that the rains will continue tomorrow, after a two-day break, and could continue during the next week.

Rescuers in boats tried to reach families trapped by floods in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province today after three major rivers, the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab, burst their banks due to heavy rains and the release of water from overflowing dams in neighboring India.

Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that 1,432 villages along the rivers were affected by the floods.

"Due to the disaster, 248,000 people were displaced, and almost 700 aid camps and 265 medical centers were set up," she said.

More than 800 dead

Since the end of June, floods have claimed more than 800 lives in Pakistan. In India's Kashmir region of the Jammu region, some of the heaviest August rains in decades caused flash floods and landslides, also affecting two famous Hindu pilgrimage routes.

The authorities evacuated thousands of people, and at least 115 people died. According to the Punjab Irrigation Department, this is the first time in 38 years that all the three rivers, Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab, are at high water levels at the same time, making rescue operations in several districts much more difficult.
