"The situation in Gaza is a shame for humanity"
King Philippe of Belgium said today that Europe must show "much stronger leadership" when it comes to the crisis in the Gaza Strip, assessing that "the current situation has lasted too long" and that it is a "shame for humanity".
He pointed out that Belgium supports the call of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to immediately end the "unsustainable" crisis, reports Politico.
Previously, Pope Leo XIV appealed to the international community to respect humanitarian law and the obligation to protect civilians, as well as the prohibition of collective punishment, indiscriminate use of force and forced displacement of the population.
Guterres said earlier this month that the situation in the Gaza Strip was dire, noting that the level of killing and destruction in the area "has no parallel in modern history."
Since the start of the Hamas-Israel war in October 2023, more than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 152,135 wounded in the Gaza Strip.
