According to the spokesman of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction, Juan Laureano, at least 594 people have been moved to shelters, AP reported.

Laureano warned that the number of evacuees could increase due to further eruptions and volcanic activity.

The Volcano of Vatre, with a height of 3,763 meters, is one of the most active in Central America and is located 53 kilometers from the capital of Guatemala.

The eruption caused concern among the local population.

Authorities also took additional precautions, including closing highways in affected areas and suspending classes in 39 schools.

The 2018 eruption caused huge losses, when 194 people died, while 234 people went missing.
