"The death toll is provisional, but for now there are around 30 dead," Abakazi told Reuters.

The Nile River, which flows through a part of Kinshasa that has a population of about 17 million, overflowed on Friday night onto the main state road, which has since been blocked to traffic.

Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba Lubaki said the floods had disabled the water system but that the supply would be restored within two or three days.

In a public address, he said that due to illegal construction, there were some deaths in floods, and he threatened to evict such residents from the settlement.

The flood damaged the main road leading to the airport, but the road has been reopened to light traffic and will be open to all traffic within 72 hours, Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba said.
