World Cup Semifinal showdown: Four champions battle for a place in the final
The World Cup is entering its final stage, and the semifinal matchups promise a true football spectacle.
The Argentina–England clash carries added significance due to one of the greatest rivalries in world football.
The two nations have produced a series of unforgettable World Cup matches – from the 1966 quarterfinal, to the famous 1986 encounter marked by Diego Maradona’s "Hand of God" goal, and the clashes in 1998 and 2002.
It will also be Lionel Messi’s first-ever World Cup match against England.
If Argentina successfully defends the title it won in 2022, it will become the first nation to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
Mbappé vs. Yamal – The Tournament’s most exciting teams
In addition to a place in the final, the battle for the World Cup's top scorer is also heating up.
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé currently lead the scoring charts with eight goals each. Erling Haaland remains on seven after Norway's elimination, while Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have scored six apiece.
Ousmane Dembélé is also in contention with five goals, while Mikel Oyarzabal, on four, still has a chance to enter the race for the Golden Boot.
Particular attention is also focused on the historic scoring race between Messi and Mbappé on the all-time World Cup goalscoring list. Messi currently has 21 World Cup goals, with Mbappé close behind on 20.
The stage is set for two thrilling semifinals featuring fierce rivalries, world-class stars, and national teams that have won a combined nine World Cup titles.
