Biljana Plavšić dies at 96
Former President of Republika Srpska Biljana Plavšić has died. She passed away this morning in Belgrade at the age of 96, according to sources close to the family who confirmed the news to the Srna news agency.
Plavšić was a former member of the wartime leadership of Republika Srpska.
Before the Hague Tribunal, she pleaded guilty to persecution on political, racial and religious grounds and was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2003.
She was released in 2009 after serving part of her sentence.
She had previously also been a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Biljana Plavšić was born on July 7, 1930, in Tuzla. She grew up in Sarajevo.
She graduated in biology from the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb, where she also earned a doctorate in botany.
After completing specialist studies in the United States, she worked as a biology professor, head of the Department of Biology and dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Sarajevo.
She published around 100 scientific papers.
On the eve of the breakup of Yugoslavia, she left her academic career and entered politics.
