The Danube reveals a 250-year-old secret: Remains of a fortification swallowed by the river emerge from water
Low water levels of the Danube have revealed the remains of the Insel Schanz (Island Redoubt) fortification, which was built in the mid-18th century near the Petrovaradin Fortress.
That the remains belong to a fortification that once stood on War Island was also confirmed by Nenad Šeguljev, author of the blog "My Fortress," who has previously researched this subject.
The fortification was built in the mid-18th century at the very beginning of the left bank of the channel that separated the Water Town and War Island. Today, the main course of the Danube runs over the area where War Island once stood, while the former left bank of the channel has become the right bank of the Danube, Šeguljev explains in his article "The Fortress Swallowed by the Danube."

"Its primary purpose was to serve as a barrier preventing the enemy from approaching the Fortress from the Danube and War Island. The fortification was built in the style of a field fortification and had four identical bastion fronts, a water-filled moat, as well as a covered way with two gathering areas," the text states.
The need to build such a fortification arose after the major siege of Petrovaradin in 1694, when Ottoman artillery used positions on War Island to bombard the Water Town, the position of the Austrian army on the left bank of the Danube, the pontoon bridge and the river boats.
Šeguljev points out that the wider public last became aware of the existence of this fortification in 1999, after the NATO bombing, when an excavator bucket was damaged during the construction of an underwater gas pipeline.
