Severe storm hits Serbia: Torrential rain and hail lash the country, visibility near zero PHOTO/VIDEO

State Hydrometeorological Institute has issued an urgent warning for heavy showers, hail and strong winds in parts of Serbia, while a severe storm has already hit the area around Prijepolje, where torrential rain and hail have affected several settlements.

During the storm, powerful thunder echoed across the area, while lightning lit up the sky above the municipality of Prijepolje.

"Heavy rainfall created large amounts of water on roads and in low-lying areas within just a few minutes," one local resident told the Regional News Agency (RINA).

For now, there is no official information on whether the hail caused damage to crops, orchards or residential buildings, nor whether emergency services have been called to intervene.

Meteorologists and emergency authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, as further rainfall and localised severe weather are possible later in the day.

As a reminder, the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute (RHMZ) has issued an urgent warning for southwestern, western and central Serbia, where severe storms are expected.

The Republic Hydrometeorological Institute (RHMZ) has also issued an urgent warning for intense thunderstorms, localised hail and strong winds in parts of western and southwestern Serbia.

According to the warning, the two most active thunderstorm systems are expected over the next two hours.

The first is forecast to move from the Mali Zvornik–Krupanj–Osečina area across the southern parts of the Mačva and Kolubara districts toward the Zlatibor district. The second is expected to move from the Sjenica–Raška area toward Novi Pazar and Tutin before continuing southward.

The RHMZ warned that the storms could bring intense rainfall, localised hail and strong winds.

The institute also highlighted that the Osečina area and its surroundings are currently being affected by heavy thunderstorms accompanied by hail.

Earlier, the RHMZ had issued an urgent severe weather warning for the areas around Ub and Lazarevac, as well as the region between Nova Varoš and Sjenica.
