Where everyone will head for the May Day holidays: Traditionally the most popular destinations

Due to the May Day holidays and the weekend, increased traffic is expected on all roads in Serbia, especially in the morning hours in cities, and in the afternoon on exits, highways, and routes leading to tourist destinations—lakes, spas, and mountains.

“Traditionally, a large number of citizens will head toward popular locations—Avala, Kosmaj, and Fruška Gora—which are among the most visited picnic areas near Belgrade. There are also Ada Ciganlija and Srebrno jezero, while spa destinations will certainly be popular as well, including Vrnjačka Banja, Sokobanja, Banja Koviljača, and many others across the country,” said Nevena Damjanović from the Automobile and Motorcycle Association of Serbia for Tanjug.

Some citizens will also travel abroad, so traffic congestion is possible at border crossings, Damjanović noted.

She added that travel planning, especially when it comes to the Hungarian and Croatian borders, should also include the time needed for waiting at border control terminals, which is generally longer compared to delays at Serbia’s border crossings.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in cooperation with Hungarian border authorities, has extended the working hours of the Bački Vinogradi border crossing and Horgoš 2 border crossing in order to reduce congestion. Bački Vinogradi will operate 24 hours a day from 7 a.m. on May 1, and Horgoš 2 from 4 a.m. on the same day will also operate non-stop, 24 hours a day.

Occasionally, a higher number of vehicles is also expected at the crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Montenegro, where there are currently no delays longer than about 15 minutes,” Damjanović said.

According to her, in order to ensure faster passage through toll collection lanes, Putevi Srbije is operating with the maximum number of toll collectors, and all measures have been taken to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles through the lanes.
