Chaos at the borders after the collapse of a bridge; Waits of up to an unbelievable 16 hours are expected

Due to the temporary closure of the bridge over the Sava River following its collapse, and the closure of the Gradiška border crossing, trucks at Jasenovac are waiting up to 16 hours, while passenger cars in Dubica are waiting three hours.

Due to the closed border crossing, major traffic congestion has also formed at other crossings between the two countries, Croatian media report.

This highly frequented border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia was closed last night due to the collapse of part of the bridge and its fencing.

The situation on the ground, reports the Zagreb-based Jutarnji list, is further complicated by the introduction of the new European Entry/Exit System (EES), under which biometric data is collected from third-country nationals upon their first entry.

The most difficult situation is currently at the Jasenovac–Donja Gradina border crossing, which is experiencing the greatest pressure from heavy truck traffic.

There, truck drivers waiting to enter Croatia are, according to the latest data from the Croatian Automobile Club, facing waits of up to an unbelievable 16 hours, while passenger cars at Jasenovac are waiting in queues of up to three hours.

Huge traffic congestion has also been recorded at other nearby border crossings. At the Hrvatska Dubica–Bosanska Dubica border crossing, passenger vehicles waiting to enter Croatia are delayed for up to three hours, while at the Hrvatska Kostajnica–Bosanska Kostajnica border crossing queues last around one hour.

The Brod-Posavina police and Hrvatske ceste reported that traffic from the Croatian side is being urgently redirected already at the Okučani junction onto an alternative route via the Slavonski Brod border crossing on state road DC53.
