Government session ceremony on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of the founding of the Governing Soviet
In the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, the ceremonial session of the Government of Serbia began on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of the founding of the Governing Soviet, presided over by the Prime Minister of Serbia, Djuro Macut.
With this ceremony, the Government of Serbia acknowledges one of the most significant moments in national history and reminds us of the importance of the institutions that laid the foundations of Serbian statehood.
In the Palace of Serbia, on the occasion of the anniversary of the founding of the Governing Council, exhibits related to that event are on display: a portrait of Prota Mateja Nenadović, a part of the manuscript from the Memoirs of Prota Mateja Nenadović "The Creation of the Karadjordje Synod" and enlarged seals of the Magistrate of Mines and the Governing Council made in brass. All members of the Government of Serbia attend the formal session.
The Serbian Governing Council, the first body of executive power in the First Serbian Uprising and the forerunner of the modern Government of Serbia, was founded on August 27, 1805, in the house of Prince Simo Marković. It was one of the most significant moves of the insurgent leaders, led by Karadjordje, aimed at establishing an executive authority in the emerging state.
Although it only operated for a few years, the Governing Serbian Soviet represented, in addition to the assembly of the insurgent leaders, the first permanent body of government, with which insurgent Serbia embarked on the path of restoring statehood after centuries of Ottoman rule.
