Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) unveiled its winter timetable this week, which comes into effect on December 13, 2026.

For the first time since 2019, the reintroduction of a direct rail connection to Belgrade is planned for 2027, with two departures daily in each direction and a journey time of approximately six hours and 30 minutes, according to ÖBB's official website.

A one-way ticket is expected to cost at least €43.90, according to the official Instagram account of Zeit im Bild, the Austrian public broadcaster's flagship news programme.

According to ÖBB, the exact launch date still depends on obtaining the necessary approvals to operate on the railway line in Hungary.

This means that trains between Vienna and Belgrade will not necessarily begin running on December 13, when the winter timetable comes into effect.

It should be noted that Hungarian Transport Minister Dávid Vitézy recently stated that testing had been completed on the high-speed rail section from Budapest to the Serbian border, and that trains to Belgrade could begin running in the second half of December.

ÖBB confirmed the launch of the Belgrade–Vienna Route to N1 a year ago

Back in November 2025, Austrian Federal Railways confirmed to N1 that plans were in place to establish a Vienna–Belgrade rail connection in cooperation with Hungarian Railways.

"Together with our partner MÁV, we plan to operate trains 144 and 148 between Belgrade, Budapest and Vienna in the future. In the opposite direction, trains 141 and 147 will run between Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade," ÖBB told N1 at the time.

They also noted that these trains currently operate only between Vienna and Budapest, meaning that the existing services will be extended to Belgrade.
