Nikola Tesla - biografija
Nikola Tesla je rođen u porodici pravoslavnog sveštenika 10. jula 1856. godine u Smiljanu, današnja Republika Hrvatska. Njegovi roditelji Milutin i Georgina osim njega imali su sina Daneta i ćerke Angelinu i Milku, starije od Nikole i Maricu najmlađe dete u porodici Tesla.

Svoje ime je dobio je po dedi sa očeve strane. Školovanje je započeo u rodnom mestu, gde je proveo najbezbrižnije godine svog života.
Nakon nesrećnog slučaja, prilikom koga je porodici Tesla poginuo sin prvenac, Dane, porodica se preselila u Gospić gde je mladi Nikola nastavio školovanje. Školujuci se u Gospiću, a kasnije na Visokoj realnoj gimnaziji u Karlovcu, njega je morila činjenica da će nakon toga morati da nastavi porodičnu tradiciju i da postane sveštenik. Ta činjenica mu nije davala mira budući da su ga iskreno zanimale prirodne nauke. Po završetku karlovačke gimnazije, na raspustu, vrativši se u Gospić mladi Tesla se razboleo od kolere. U to vreme ova opaka bolest odnosila je veliki broj života.
“U jednom od samrtnih trenutaka za koje su mislili da su mi poslednji, otac je uleteo u moju sobu. Još uvek pamtim njegovo bledo lice dok je pokušavao da me razveseli, nesigurnim glasom. Rekoh mu:
-Možda bih mogao da se oporavim ako mi dopustiš da studiram tehniku.
-Ići ćeš u najbolju tehničku školu na svetu, odgovorio je svečano, a znao sam da tako i misli.”
Kako je, zaista, i usledio čudesan oporavak, kao što mu je otac i obećao Nikola Tesla je 1875. godine upisao Višu tehničku školu u Gracu. Na tim, toliko željenim studijama, Tesla je iskazao više nego potrebnog interesovanja za savladavanje predmeta. Na taj način je želeo da svome ocu pokaže kako nije pogrešio što mu je dozvolio da se posveti izučavanju tajni matematike, fizike i mašinstva. Ipak, i pored priznanja profesora koje je dobijao u svedočanstvima, njegov otac kao da je bio nezainteresovan za sinovljeve uspehe.
“To je skoro ubilo moju ambiciju; ali kasnije kada je otac umro, potreslo me je kada sam našao zavežljaj pisama koja su moji profesori pisali predlažući mu da me ispiše sa fakulteta, ukoliko neće da se ubijem prekomernim radom.”

U Gracu, na tim studijama Tesli se rodila ideja o stvaranju obrtnog polja. Kada je jednom od svojih profesora izložio ideju da bi možda bilo moguće pokretati motor bez četkica dobio je sledeći odgovor:
“Možda će gospodin Tesla da uradi velike stvari, ali mu sigurno neće uspeti da uradi ovo. To bi bilo kao kad bi se jedna konstantna privačna sila kao što je gravitacija preobratila u rotacionu. To je perpetuum mobile, nemoguća ideja.”
Godine 1879. Nikola Tesla je dobio svoje prvo nameštenje, počeo je da radi kao pomoćni inženjer u Mariboru. Iste godine umro mu je otac i da bi ispunio očevu zelju da završi fakultet 1880. Tesla upisuje fakultet u Pragu. Nekoliko godina, koje su usledile, predstavljale su značajan period u karijeri Nikole Tesle. Nakon rada u Budimpešti u Centralnom telefonskom uredu, usledio je izum obrtnog magnetnog polja (februara 1882.). Te iste godine na preporuku svojih predpostavljenih dobio je zaposlenje u Parizu u Edisonovom kontinentalnom društvu. Tu je proveo dve godine na raznim i vrlo odgovornim poslovima a kako njegovo umeće nije moglo da prođe nezapaženo preporučen je i samom Edisonu. Edison je u to vreme bio najznačajnija ličnost tehnike u Americi, heroj elektrike koga je slavila cela nacija. On je Tesli 1884. godine dao posao u svojoj laboratoriji u Njujorku, ali njihova saradnja nije dugo trajala.

Nezadovoljan odnosom predpostavljenih prema svome radu, Nikola Tesla je već naredne 1885. napustio Edisona i uz pomoć nekih investitora osnovao “Tesla Arc Light Co”. U početku, zbog obaveza prema investitorima, morao je da radi u oblasti lučnih svetiljki, ali je nakon toga krenuo u realizaciju svojih projekata iz oblasti polifaznih naizmeničnih struja. Nakon predavanja “Novi sistem motora i transformatora naizmenične struje” 16. maja 1888. koje je odrzao pred Američkim institutom elektroinženjera (AIEE), Tesla je dobio ponudu od firme Vestinghaus (Westinghouse) za otkup patenata iz oblasti polifaznih struja.
Usledile su godine u kojima je Tesla sa Vestinghausovim inženjerima radio na praktičnoj primeni svojih izuma. Tridesetog jula 1891. Nikola Tesla je dobio američko državljanstvo.
Dobar deo 1892. Tesla je proveo u Evropi. Tu je kroz mnogobrojna predavanja promovisao svoje ideje. Svoje predavanje “Eksperimenti sa naizmeničnim strujama visokih napona i visokih frekfencija” održao je u Engleskoj pred Institutom elektroinženjera i pred Kraljevskim institutom. Isto predavanje ponovio je u Parizu pred interacionalnim društvom električara i Francuskim društvom za fiziku. Stigao je i da jedini put u životu poseti Beograd gde je ostao tri dana. Takode te 1882. godine Tesla je ostao i bez drugog roditelja. Umrla mu je majka i taj gubitak mu je strašno teško pao.
Nakon povratka u Ameriku usledila je nova borba. Zagovornici upotrebe jednosmerne, ujedno i protivnici korišćenja naizmenicne struje osuli su drvlje i kamenje kritikujuci i upozoravajuci na opasnosti koje njena upotreba donosi. Trijumf, u ovom sukobu poznatom kao “Rat struja”, su 1893. odneli oni koji su imali malo više vizionarstva sa sobom. Svetska izložba u Čikagu je te godine bila osvetljena uz pomoć naizmenične struje.
Usledilo je istraživanje na polju bežičnog prenosa signala i energije. Ssvoju ideju i nameru da svoje istraživanje uputi u tom smeru Tesla je javno izneo u govoru prilikom puštanja u pogon elektrane na Nijagarinim vodopadima 1897. Kakav li je bio izraz lica ljudi kojima neko, tek sto su doživeli prenos električne energije na veću udaljenost, priča o prenosu iste bez žica?

Veliku misteriju predstavljaju Teslina istraživanja na ovom polju. Iako je proveo skoro godinu dana u Kolorado Springsu (1899-1900), i vodio iscrpan dnevnik o svojim istraživanjima, do šire upotrebe bežičnog prenosa električne energije do dana današnjeg nije došlo. Tesla je imao nameru da iskoristi gornje slojeve Zemljine kugle kako bi energiju sa jednog preneo na drugi kraj sveta. Neka svoja otkrića opisao je u eseju “Problem povećanja ljudske energije”, koji je izazvao široko interesovanje naučnog i poslovnog sveta.
Verovatno i sam zaintrigiran esejem J.P. Morgan (John Pierpont Morgan 1837-1913), u to vreme jedan od najbogatijih ljudi Amerike, ponudio je finansijsku podršku Tesli. Do saradnje je došlo na projektu “Svetski radio sistem” koji je Tesla vodio u svojoj laboratoriji na Long Ajlendu. Već posle godinu dana 1901. Morgan je naučniku uskratio finansije. Povod za prestanak saradnje je bilo prvo uspesno transantlantsko bežično slanje radio poruke, koje je izveo Markoni (Guglielmo Marconi 1874- 1937). Tesla je Morganu tada priznao da je on tako nešto mogao da učini odavno, ali da to nije cilj njegovog istraživanja. Morgan je bio besan zbog ove, kako je on smatrao, utaje i više nije nikada sarađivao sa Teslom.
Tesla se nekako snalazio na ovom projektu do 1905. kada je i potpuno iscrpeo izvore finansiranja i bio je primoran da ga napusti. Usledile su godine u kojima je on radio na usavršavanju postojećih i patentiranju novih pronalazaka u oblasti mašinstva. Te godine su bile dosta teške za njega. Javnost se podsetila velikog genija 1917. kada mu je dodeljena Edisonova medalja, najveće američko odličje u oblasti tehnike. 1919. Nikola Tesla je objavio svoju autobiografiju kroz seriju članaka u časopisu Electrical Experimenter. Za ljude, koji mu nisu bili bliski, vesti od Tesle su stizale kroz novinske članke u kojima su mogli da pročitaju njegove često i previše senzacionalne izjave.
Izjave poput “Kako signalizirati na Mars” ili “Rasturanje tornada” i nisu baš doprinosile njegovom ugledu. Tada su se više smatrale plodom bujne mašte nego li mogućim naučnim dostignućima. Tesla je nekako opstajao uz pomoć prijatelja i skromne penzije koju je nerado prihvatio od tadašnje jugoslovenske vlade. Njegovo zdravlje se značajno pogoršalo nakon smrti njegovih prijatelja Roberta Andervuda Džonsona (Robert Underwood Johnson) i Ričmonda Pirsona Hobsona (Richmond Pearson Hobson) 1937. Te godine je doživeo i saobraćajnu nesreću - udario ga je taksi dok je prelazio ulicu.
Skoro sam, bez porodice, i samo u društvu sestrića Save Kosanovića (sin Marice Kosanović) i par prijatelja, Tesla se retko pojavljivao u javnosti u poznim godinama svog života. Izuzetak je bila poseta Kralja Petra II Karađorđevića koji je došao da se upozna sa Teslom u njegovom apartmanu u junu 1942.

Godine 1943. petog januara Tesla je pozvao američko vojno ministarstvo. U kratkom razgovoru veliki naučnik je američkoj vojsci ponudio tajne svog super oružja. Oficir nije shvatio o kome se radi i verovatno misleći da je u pitanju šaljivdžija ili ludak obećao je da će se javiti kasnije.
U osamdeset i sedmoj godini u hotelu Njujorker 7. januara 1943. godine prestalo je da kuca srce ovog plemenitog naučnika. U katedrali sv. Jovana Bogoslova 12. januara okupilo se dve hiljade ljudi među kojima je bio veliki broj pronalazača, dobitnika Nobelove nagrade, svetski priznatih imena iz oblasti elektrotehnike, jugoslovenskih diplomata.
Dva dana ranije tadašnji gradonačelnik Njujorka Fiorelo La Gvardija (Fiorello LaGuardia) održao je posmrtni govor koji je radio Njujork direktno prenosio.
…Tesla je bio veliki humanista-čist naučni genije - pesnik u nauci… On je činio izvanredne, zapanjujuce, čudesne stvari u toku svog života. Činio je to jednostavno da bi služio ljudskom rodu- a za svoje usluge nije tražio ništa.
Novac - on za njega nije mario.
Počast - ko je taj neko ko može da počastvuje drugog.
To je bio njegov stav.
Zahvalnost - on je nije očekivao niti je tražio…
Onaj značajni deo Tesle živi u njegovom dostignuću koje je ogromno-skoro nemoguće da se izračuna-koje je sastavni deo naseg života i sastavni deo naše civilizacije, nase svakodnevnice našeg tekućeg napora…”

Posmrtni ostaci jednog od najvećih ljudi, koji su živeli u prošlom veku, nalaze se u muzeju Nikole tesle u Beogradu u urni idealnog sfernog oblika.
Danas se u svetu ime Nikole Tesle uzvikuje glasno, sa puno poštovanja, što ovaj čovek i zaslužuje. Brojna udruženja, studentske i inženjerske organizacije, čuvaju uspomenu na velikana svetske nauke. O njemu su napisane mnoge knjige, ispričane razne i moguće i nemoguće teorije, ali je samo jedna istina. Nikola Tesla je bio veliki naučnik, čovek bez čijih bi izuma teško mogli da živimo ovako kako živimo - sa puno komfora i slobode koju nam pruža električna struja. Naša je dužnost da, u znak zahvalnosti, ne dozvolimo da se njegovo ime ikada zaboravi.

Varamo se ako mislimo da ga ceo svet ceni i slavi kao i mi. Jednom sam o tome pricao sa kolegom amerikancem koji je na moju izjavu da je Tesla bio najveci pronalazac odgovorio: "Bendzamin Frenkilin je takodje bio veliki pronalazac, pronasao je gromobran." Ipak nismo u Teslinoj oblasti, verujem da su inzinjeri mnogo bolje informisani po tom pitanju.

Tesla je bio pametan covek, on ima svojih izuma koji su vazni ali i nije tako velik na zapadu kao sto ga mi slavimo. Kao prvo sve sto mi mislimo o Tesli u zapadu se misli za Edisona, ko je po meni kao Gates danas. On je kupio patente i onda ih je komercijalizirao. Ima dosta tih naucnika u tome vremenu koji su svi radili u istim stvarima. Tesla je jedan od njih ali ne i najveci.
Ja mislim da je pametno da se on slavi kao naucnik ali u Balkanu kao i sve druge stvari mora da se sve nacionalizira. On je bio Srbin bla bla bla. Ako je bio Srbin on se vaspitao u Hrvatskoj. I Hrvati mogu da kazu da ima njihove skole, to mogu da tvrde da Austrijanci i Cesi. A naravno da su mu Amerikanci dali sta mu treba da radi. Znaci on je Srbin rodjen u Hrvatskoj sto je i ispravno. Hrvatska je u to vreme bila okupirana od Austro-Ungarske.
Daj boze da mi svi u Balkanu imamo vise Tesli i manje pametnakovica kojima je vaznije sta je Tesla od toga sta je Tesla uradio za nauku i covecanstvo. Takvi niti znaju tacno sta je on uradio pa ga cisto slave kao za najpametnijeg naucnika na svetu samo zato sto je Srbin. Ako tako nesto kazes nekom zapadnjaku cisto ce se nasmejati.

Koliko veliki naucnik, toliko i veliki mislilac i primer svetosti. Toliko veliki da bi njegova misao i stav trebalo da bude svetiljka duhovnosti u udzbenicima nase dece, da imaju valjan primer za svrsishovit zivot, solidarnost, davanje i ljubav prema svetu i coveku.
Kada bi Srbi postali svesni kakvog duhovnog i naucnog giganta su imali, mozda bi shvatili koliko je skromnost nadmocna u odnosu na lazno samoljublje kojim smo okupirani.

Тесла није био геније који се бавио претпоставкама и теоријама, па да будуће генерације побијају или потврђује његове мисли. Он је без грешке осећао појаве у природи. Знао је тачно законе по којима се оне одвијају и директно их претакао у изуме тако да никоме није остављао простора да га касније оспорава или побија.

Ponosam sam što je bio Srbin i sretan što je otišao u Ameriku jer da je ostao kod kuće vjerovatno ne bi umro 1943, već 1941...

BRAVO Rade, bas u sridu pogodi. Umro bi tad, pardon zaklan-poginuo.... 1941, pod sahovnicom, te bi mu i danas odavali sve ljudske pocasti pod sahovnicom. Ispricavam se, ali objasnite mi sto je razlika u ovih j..ih 50-60 godina. Predlazem da b92 napravi reportazu o Smiljanima danas, o sastasvu stanovnistva, koje je prije 1941 pretezno bilo... koliko ja znam. Sto je sa tadasnjim prezimenima koja su pripadala drugoj vjeroispovjesti, a danas su... Uradimo historijki skrining na najednostavniji nacin. Vidjecemo danas koliko su ti nekad omrzeni fasisticki ciljevi uspjeli ili ne. Sto je sa Teslama i Mandicima (majka NT je bila Mandic) danas.

Kazu da je i sam Nikola posjetio u Kistanjama! Bilo bi ljepo da se neko zainteresira o tome i sazna tu sitnicu o zivotu Velikog Uma!

One kojima smeta da se diskutuje o Teslinom nacionalnom poreklu,uputio bih na "Enciklopediu Britanicu" (internet izdanje). O engleskim genijima Njutnu,Darvinu,Sekspiru ne pise da su evropljani,kosmopoliti, internacionalcu,ili da su rodjeni u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, Velikoj Britaniji ili da je njihova nacionalnost nebitna za engleze...Ne,tamo jednostavno pise da su - englezi.Ni manje ni vise.Za engleze je to ocigledno bitno.
Da dodam, prvi predsednik Srpske akademije nauka je bio hrvat Josif Pancic, i niko mu zbog toga ovde nije porusio spomenik.

Na zalost, uvek se zanemari da se istakne da je Tesla otkrio nacin prenosa sile bez fizickog kontakta sto je bilo neshvatljivo nauci tog vremena. Nije u pitanju ni naizmenicna struja ni asinhroni motor nego obrtno elektromagnetno polje koje bez fizickog kontakta postaje najveci proizvodjac energije i najveca masina radilica svih vremena.
Sve to je uzgredni proizvod koncepta obrtnog magnetnog polja. Sa tim pronalazkom on je na nivou Arhimeda i njegovog zakona poluge i pronalaska masine koja radi na bazi toplotne energije. To su tri kamena temeljca celokupne industrijalizacije.

kako dugo godina zivim u americi i kako sam usa-gradjanin a i srbije, puno puta sam se pitao ,kako to da drzva serbia nikad nije postavila pitanje nadoknade drzavi serbiji ,,a, razlog je ,, ceo vet zna da se usa-stekla dosta veliko bogastvo na Nikolinim - patentima???
I,bilo bi lepo da nekad neko ili neka komisija iz serbie pokrene pitanje u vezi nadoknade,, ubedjen sam da je to moguce,,pozdrav ...

Tesla i Mark Tvain su bili jedni od najboljih prijatelja. Izgleda da je Tesla pred smrt osim Milice cesto spominjao i Tvena. Cesto je o njemu govorio kao da je ziv (Tven je umreo barem 20 godina pre njega) i jako se ljutio kada je neko pokusavao da ga uveri u supratno.
Tesla i Tven su se upoznali vrlo brzo po Teslinom dolasku u Ameriku - na jednom od promocija Teslinog najvaznijego izuma - A/C. Svi se slazu da je Mark Tvain plako kada je upoznao Teslu. Jedino su misljenja iz proslosti oprecna zasto je Tvain plako. Neki kazu da je plako od srece
kada je saznao da je Teslina omoljena knijga iz detnjistva bila Tom Sojer. Po drugima, Mark Tvain nije plako od srece vec od besa - ubrzo po Teslinoj promociji je shvatio da je pogresno investirao u D/C umesto u A/C.
Jos nesto - tacno je da se o Tesli ne zna koliko bi trebalo i da je pred kraj zivota i posle smrti njegov rad bio zapostavljen. Ipak, Tesla je mnogo vise slavljen i uvazavan za zivota (od kad je dosao u Ameriku pa sve do pred kraj svog zivota Tesla se kretao u najvisim Njujorsim krugovima) nego sto sam ja npr. mislila i nego sto se u Srbiji predstavlja.
Tacno je da Amerikanci ne znaju mnogo o Tesli, mnogi cak za njega nisu culi. Nazalost, nista mi tu veliko, na globalnom planu ne mozemo da ucinimo. Licno i malo mozemo - ja npr u svom kjubiklu u Bostonu imam okacen Teslin poster. Kada me kolege na poslu pitaju ko je to, ja im objasnim.

Nikola Tesla
Born July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, a small village in Croatia, Nikola Tesla was the discoverer of the Alternating Current(AC) power system. His other contributions as an inventor are to numerous to mention here, I'll just give a few. These contributions include hydro electric generators, the AC power distribution system we still use today, the X-ray machine, MRI, the discovery of a rotating magnetic field, Radio and much, much more.
His most popular invention was discovering how to harness the power of Alternating Current.

Tesla worked at the Continental Edison Company in Paris designing dynamos. While living in Europe he came up with the design of his AC induction motor and built a prototype and it worked. He traveled from Europe to America in 1884 and started work for Edison in New York. Eventually Tesla and Edison fought over DC and AC. Thomas Edison built his empire on DC, he didn't want to see it be destroyed.

The victor of the War of the Currents was AC power. Direct Current(DC) doesn't travel very well for long distances, it grows weaker with distance. AC power is more efficient because it can step up to high voltage. Through time the AC system was to be the only system used for distributing electrical power to businesses and homes.
Thomas Edison is credited with the invention of the light bulb and direct current. This is totally incorrect. You saw proof of an ancient Egyptian Light bulb. How can Edison be the inventor, when the ancient Egyptians had it before Edison's parents were even born?
The above system was designed by Nikola Tesla and is still in use today. A hydroelectric generator, AC power lines, a Tesla coil to step up to high frequency, distribution power lines, another Tesla coil to step down from high frequency and then electricity is used accordingly.
Telephone polls hold up AC power lines which deliver power to homes and businesses. In a storm, a branch from a tree could knock out power to customers by falling on these AC lines. There is an invention of Nikola Tesla's that I wish we were using today. The Wardenclyffe transmitter:
Wardenclyffe, a 154ft tower that was to be topped with a huge copper dome(when completed). Building one every so many miles would transmit electricity wireless all over the world.
J.P. Morgan had built one of the largest financial empires of the century. Nikola was invited to Morgan's home. Tesla asked J.P. Morgan for the money he needed to start the Wardenclyffe project. Morgan turned him down. Tesla offered him 51% of the patent rights to his inventions for $150,000.00. Morgan accepted.
Tesla was hoping other investors would get interested later on after the project took shape. Nikola ran out of money before it was completed. He went back to Morgan and asked for more money. Morgan loaned it to him. Delays in receiving new equipment plagued Tesla. His motors and dynamos were not easily produced because of their unusual design. Equipment for their manufacture had to be specially ordered. This caused unwanted delays. Tesla sought to have this project completed in nine months. After one year Morgan withdrew because he hadn't seen a return on his investment. His classic argument was, if any one can draw on the power, where do we put the meter?
I personally think if we install this system on earth today with modern materials, we can charge for the purchase of an antenna for each customer and a flat rate for the power consumed. Of course the antenna would be a "smart" antenna. It would only allow a certain maximum amount of power to be consumed at any given time. There are ways to implement this technology in a new social structure.
Marconi
The U.S. Supreme Court in 1943, held Marconi's most important patents invalid, recognizing Nikola Tesla's work more significant. Nikola Tesla is the true father of radio , not Marconi.... I discovered a web site which is devoted to Marconi, and it says that Marconi is "the father of radio!" Michael Faraday
Tesla is preceded in greatness only by Michael Faraday who in 1831 rocked the scientific world with his discovery that magnetism can produce electricity...if it is accompanied by motion. Faraday discovered the principle, but not how to make it power the world; Tesla alone accomplished this singular feat.
Here is a task for you to try:
Go check your encyclopedia to find the answers to the following questions: (answers are given in parentheses)
1) Who invented the radio? (Marconi)
2) Who discovered X-rays? (Roentgen)
3) Who invented the vacuum tube amplifier? (Forest)
In fact, while you're at it, check to see who discovered the fluorescent bulb, neon lights, speedometer, the automobile ignition system, and the basics behind radar, electron microscope, and the microwave oven. Of course, the ancient Egyptians had the Light bulb before Tesla was born but that's beside the point here.
Chances are that you will see little mention of a guy named Nikola Tesla, the most famous scientist in the world at the turn of the century.
In fact, few people today have ever heard of the guy. Good old Thomas Edison made sure of that.
After all, Tesla was considered an eccentric who talked of death rays that could destroy 10,000 airplanes at a distance of 250 miles, claimed to be able split the Earth in two, believed that both voice and image could be transmitted through the air (in the late 1800's), and essentially told Edison to take his DC electrical system and st-ck it you k-ow w-ere.
In other words, anyone that has even heard of Tesla probably considers him to be a first class wacko.
But, the times are a changin'. The problem is that Tesla probably could do all these things that he claimed were possible. In fact, Tesla invented every single one of the items listed above (but gets no credit) and much more. Look around you and chances are Tesla is somehow responsible for most of the things that make modern life so modern.

No doubt about it, Nikola Tesla is the greatest mind since da Vinci. Tesla had an extraordinary memory and spoke six languages. He spent four years at the Polytechnic Institute at Gratz studying math, physics, and mechanics.
What made Tesla great, however, was his amazing understanding of electricity. Remember that this was a time when electricity was still in its infancy. The lightbulb hadn't even been invented yet(of course it has; the ancient Egyptians had it!). When Tesla first came to the United States in 1884, he worked for Thomas Edison. Edison had just patented the lightbulb, so he needed a system to distribute electricity.
Edison had all sorts of problems with his DC system of electricity. He promised Tesla big bucks in bonuses if he could get the bugs out of the system. Tesla ended up saving Edison over $100,000 (millions of $$$ by today's dollars), but Edison refused to live up to his end of the bargain.
Tesla quit and Edison spent the rest of his life trying to squash Tesla's genius (and the main reason Tesla is unknown today).
Tesla devised a better system for electrical transmission - the AC (alternating current) system that we use in our homes today. AC offered great advantages over the DC system. By using Tesla's newly developed transformers, AC voltages could be stepped up and transmitted over long distances through thin wires. DC could not (requiring a large power plant every square mile while transmitting through very thick cables). Of course, a system of transmission would be incomplete without devices to run on them. So, he invented the motors that are used in every appliance in your home. This was no simple achievement - scientists of the late 1800's were convinced that no motor could be revised for an alternating current system, making the use of AC a waste of time.
After all, if the current reverses direction 60 times a second, the motor will rock back and forth and never get anywhere. Tesla solved this problem easily and proved everyone wrong.
He was using fluorescent bulbs in his lab some forty years before industry "invented" them. At World's Fairs and similar exhibitions, he took glass tubes and molded them into the shapes of famous scientists' names - the first neon signs that we see all around us today. I almost forgot - Tesla designed the world's first hydroelectric plant, located in Niagara Falls. He also patented the first speedometer for cars.
Word began to spread about his AC system and it eventually reached the ears of George Westinghouse. Tesla signed a contract with Westinghouse under which he would receive $2.50 for each kilowatt of AC electricity sold.
Suddenly, Tesla had the cash to start conducting all the experiments he ever dreamed of. But Edison had too much money invested in his DC system, so Tommy (Edison) did his best to discredit Tesla around every turn.
Edison constantly tried to show that AC electricity was far more dangerous than his DC power.
Tesla counteracted by staging his own marketing campaign. At the 1893 World Exposition in Chicago (attended by 21 million people), he demonstrated how safe AC electricity was by passing high frequency AC power through his body to power light bulbs. He then was able to shoot large lightning bolts from his Tesla coils to the crowd without harm. Nice trick!
When the royalties owed to Tesla started to exceed $1 million, Westinghouse ran into financial trouble. Tesla realized that if his contract remained in effect, Westinghouse would be out of business and he had no desire to deal with the creditors. His dream was to have cheap AC electric available to all people. Tesla took his contract and ripped it up! Instead of becoming the world's first billionaire, he was paid $216,600 outright for his patents.
In 1898, he demonstrated to the world the first remote controlled model boat at Madison Square Garden. So you can thank Tesla for the invention of those remote controlled planes, cars, and boats (and televisions!), also.
Tesla had a dream of providing free energy to the world. In 1900, backed by $150,000 from financier J.P. Morgan, Tesla began testing of his so called "Wireless Broadcasting System" tower on Long Island, New York. This broadcasting tower was intended to link the world's telephone and telegraph services, as well as transmit pictures, stock reports, and weather information worldwide.
Unfortunately, Morgan cut funding when he realized that it meant FREE energy for the world.
Many stories claim that the U. S. government destroyed the tower during World War One for fear that the German u-boat spies would use the tower as a landmark to navigate by. In reality, Tesla ran into financial trouble after Morgan cut funding for the project and the tower was sold for scrap to pay off creditors.
The world thought he was nuts - after all, transmission of voice, picture, and electricity was unheard of at this time.
What they didn't know was that Tesla had already demonstrated the principles behind radio nearly ten years before Marconi's supposed invention. In fact, in 1943 (the year Tesla died), the Supreme Court ruled that Marconi's patents were invalid due to Tesla's previous descriptions. Still, most references do not credit Tesla with the invention of radio. (Sidenote: Marconi's radio did not transmit voices - it transmitted a signal - something Tesla had years before.)
At this point, the press started to exaggerate Tesla's claims. Tesla reported that he had received radio signals from Mars and Venus. Today we know that he was actually receiving the signals from distant stars, but too little was known about the universe at that time. Instead, the press had a field day with his "outrageous" claims.
In his Manhattan lab, Tesla made the earth into an electric tuning fork. He managed to get a steam-driven oscillator to vibrate at the same frequency as the ground beneath him (like Ella Fitgerald breaking the glass with her voice in those old Memorex commercials). The result? An earthquake on all the surrounding city blocks. The buildings trembled, the windows broke, and the plaster fell off the walls.
Tesla contended that, in theory, the same principle could be used to destroy the Empire State Building or even possibly split the Earth in two. Tesla had accurately determined the resonant frequencies of the Earth almost 60 years before science could confirm his results.
Don't think he didn't attempt something like splitting the Earth open (well, sort of).
In his Colorado Springs lab in 1899, he sent waves of energy all the way through the Earth, causing them to bounce back to the source (providing the theory for today's accurate earthquake seismic stations). When the waves came back, he added more electricity to it.
The result? The largest man-made lightning bolt ever recorded - 130 feet! - a world's record still unbroken! The accompanying thunder was heard 22 miles away. The entire meadow surrounding his lab had a strange blue glow, similar to that of St. Elmo's Fire.
But, this was only a warm-up for his real experiment! Unfortunately, he blew out the local power plant's equipment and he was never able to repeat the experiment.
At the beginning of World War I, the government desperately searched for a way to detect German submarines. The government put Thomas Edison in charge of the search for a good method. Tesla proposed the use of energy waves - what we know today as radar - to detect these ships. Edison rejected Tesla's idea as ludicrous and the world had to wait another 25 years until it was invented.
His reward for a lifetime of creativity? The prized (to everyone but Tesla) Edison Medal! A real slap in the face after all the verbal abuse Tesla took from Edison.
The stories go on and on.
Industry's attempt (obviously very successful) to purge him from the scientific literature had driven him into exile for nearly twenty years. Lacking capital, he was forced to place his untested theories into countless notebooks.
The man who invented the modern world died nearly penniless at age 86 on January 7, 1943. More than two thousand people attended his funeral.
In his lifetime, Tesla received over 800 different patents. He probably would have exceeded Edison's record number if he wasn't always broke - he could afford very few patent applications during the last thirty years of his life. Unlike Edison, Tesla was an original thinker whose ideas typically had no precedent in science.
Unfortunately, the world does not financially reward people of Tesla's originality. We only award those that take these concepts and turn them into a refined, useful product.
Scientists today continue to scour through his notes. Many of his far flung theories are just now being proven by our top scientists. For example, the Tesla bladeless disk turbine engine that he designed, when coupled with modern materials, is proving to be among the most efficient motors ever designed. His 1901 patented experiments with cryogenic liquids and electricity provide the foundation for modern superconductors. He talked about experiments that suggested particles with fractional charges of an electron - something that scientists in 1977 finally discovered - quarks!

upravo i bitna razlika u ličnosti koja nas dijeli od skromnog Tesle.
Na svijetu ima jako puno zaniljivih,
kompleksnih i za znanost još neobjašnjivih fenomena,
koji su za neke ljudi, cije doba ocito još
nije došlo, sasvim normalni. Ako netko misli da nema takvih
genijalaca, varate se, treba pogledati dublje,
jer većina njih još uvijek čeka pravi trenutak.
Valjda su naučili nešto o pohlepi i dehumanizaciji modernog
društva na primjeru Tesle.
