QUICK TIP - Two tennis warriors go to battle!
Well, Roger Federer is the 2007 US Open Champ. He did it again! His
opponent Novak Dokovic certainly had his chances, but got a little
nervous (being the first time in a Grand Slam final) and could not
capitalize on them. What can we learn from that match? For
starters, even the best players have leads in a match and then blow
it! Dokovic quickly bounced back and kept fighting the entire match
(a true tennis warrior). I thought that showed tremendous mental
strength that kept him in the match waiting for an opportunity to
seize the moment. However, every time that moment came he just
could not put Federer away! Because of Dokovic's determined
attitude I never totally counted him out until the very end when he
missed that final drop shot. He is a dangerous competitor for
Federer and I'm sure we will see more hard fought battles in the
future. Bring it on!
On the other hand, Roger Federer was amazing. He hung in there and
weathered many set points. When the table turned and he finally had
the opportunity...he seized it! He is able to maintain an
extraordinarily relaxed focus even when he is in trouble. How did
Federer learn to do this? In an interview during the US Open, he
was asked what he has learned from past experience that helps him
in tough situations. Federer said that he learned not to panic or
think a player is going to play like that the whole time. He said
in the past he would think that just because a player had one
fantastic set he would continue to play great. Experience taught
him that often a player cannot sustain play at that level
throughout the whole match. So he has learned to not panic and to
continue to play his game waiting for opportunities.
He also learned not to begin making major changes to his game to
try to beat his opponent. Usually no change is necessary, just
maintaining his level of play. Great stuff! Most players panic at
the first sign of negatives, mistakes and failures.
Summary
1. Even great players can falter after establishing a lead.
2. Never stop fighting. Even if you lose a lead.
3. When your opponent is playing fantastic...do not panic. And do
NOT make any major changes to your game. Try to stay consistent and
play within your game.
Your Tennis Pro,
Tom Veneziano
