On Tuesday, June 28, the Sacramento Kings selected Louisville's Francisco Garcia in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft. Garcia, a 6-7, 190-pound guard, averaged a team-leading 15.7 points a game for the Cardinals during the 2004-05 season. An early entry candidate, Garcia completed his junior season finishing among Louisville's career leaders in three-point field goals (180, fourth), free throw percentage (.849, third), blocked shots (134, eighth), and scoring (1,413 points, 23rd). He was named to the John R. Wooden All-America team and the NABC All-America Second Team in 2004-05. In three seasons, Garcia averaged 14.4 ppg (.448 FG%, .369 3pt%, .849 FT%), 3.9 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.48 spg, and 1.37 bpg in 98 games.
Garcia scored in double-figures in 73 games in his career, reaching the 20-point mark in 22 contests, including three times in last year's NCAA Tournament. In Louisville's five NCAA Tournament games, Garcia averaged 17.6 points and 4.0 assists. He scored a career-high 29 points on two occasions, against Morehead State and Tennessee State. As a sophomore (2003-04), Garcia led the team with a 16.4 scoring average and 131 total assists. He dished out a school-record 15 assists against Murray State, while recording 17 points and seven rebounds in the game. In his first collegiate season at Louisville, Garcia was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year after averaging 11.2 points a game, second-best on the team. He scored 24 points on two occasions, draining eight three-pointers in a game against Cincinnati.
