Nets big man talks about adapting to a new city, team and language

Krstic Gets Start In NBA

The 24th overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, Nenad Krstic is in the homestretch of his rookie season. Prior to joining New Jersey, where he's started 39 games this season, Krstic spent two years playing for KK Partizan, the top team in Yugoslavia, and was a member of the Serbia and Montenegro National Team which competed in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Krstic spoke to NBA.com/espanol about his first year in the league.
How did you feel about representing Serbia Montenegro in the Olympics?

Krstic: It was very exciting and it’s an absolute honor to represent your country in the Olympic Games, but unfortunately, we lost two very important matches. In these types of tournaments you can’t afford losing. But it was still an incredible experience, it was my first time participating in the Olympics and it was wonderful.

Following your participation in Athens, what’s your take on the level of basketball played around the word?

Krstic: International basketball is increasingly reaching the same level – so I guess you could say there are no longer good and bad teams. All the teams have great players and that makes every game more competitive. In the Olympics there were teams that played really well and that could’ve easily made it to the Gold medal, like Italy, our team or even the U.S. But Argentina participated really well, played incredibly and won the most important games that took them on their way to the Gold Medal.

This season, you’ve started 39 games with the Nets. Little by little you’ve been earning your starter position. What do you think about this progress?

Krstic: I feel very motivated. Just playing in the NBA is such a great accomplishment, like a dream come true. When I was a kid I used to dream about playing with the best, and now that I’m in the league I realize it’s a reality and I’m competing with the best in the world. I’m very happy about my coach giving me the opportunity and confidence to play as a starter in the last few games and I think it’s all been thanks to the effort and motivation I demonstrate during practices and minutes played.

What does it mean be on the same team as Vince Carter and Jason Kidd?

Krstic: It’s great; they are two of the best players in the league. Carter is an All-Star and I’ve had a great opportunity to share and learn from their experiences.

How is your adaptation process coming along - new city and language?

Krstic: At first it was very difficult because everything was different, but I’ve gotten accustomed to living in New Jersey now. Having a teammate like Zoran Planinic has also helped, since he’s also from Europe. It’s been good for both of us, we both speak the same language, and we’ve become good friends, helping each other through this adaptation process. My English has improved too, although it could be better, but I’m still learning. When I arrived I didn’t speak any English, I speak it better now.

What do you do on your free time, when you’re not playing or training?

Krstic: I try to rest as much as possible. I also like to watch movies or go to a good restaurant. That way I get to know the city a little better.

The Nets are behind the Celtics and the Sixers in the Atlantic Division, and are now only five games away from the playoffs. Do you think that the team can overcome this to win the division and classify?

Krstic: We still have the opportunity to improve and win the games we need to win to be first in the division. We have a few games at home that are critical and we need to win and then we’ll see if we can get there.

What do you think about the Latin players in the league?

Krstic: They all play very well. I like watching Ginóbili play, he’s an All-Star, but I think all of the Latin players that are in the NBA play well. The ones that play in Europe are also good; they’ve been doing a good job with their teams.

What is your personal balance this season?

Krstic: Any way you see it – this has been a good season for me. The team has always had the playoffs as its main goal and that’s why we play hard and we give our best at every game. I’m very satisfied with my playing level this year and I’m happy about being a starter for the team. This is only my first season and I think that I’ve done pretty well.
