Montenegro and NATO have signed an agreement allowing the Alliance's troops transit through that country's territory. The deal was signed today in Podgorica by Montenegrin Defense Minister Boro Vucinic and Lt. Gen. Peter Pearson, deputy commander, Allied Joint Force Command Headquarters in Naples. Montenegro, NATO sign transit arrangement The transit arrangement, set up in support of peace operations, was signed in 2005 by the former state union of Serbia and Montenegro and NATO, while today's document will allow for its implementation, Vucinic told reporters in Podgorica. The document will allow forces under NATO's operative command and control to move through sovereign Montenegrin land, air and territorial waters. Vucinic said today's signing was another proof of his country's dedication and strategic choice to build its future within the framework of collective security. He added that Euro-Atlantic integration of Montenegro meant peace and stability for its citizens. Lt. Gen. Pearson for his part said that the document was one of many to be signed by Montenegro and NATO. "We in Naples wish Montenegro success in joining NATO," he told journalists. The arrangement also defines privileges and immunity to be enjoyed by NATO personnel, in line with a UN convention regulating that field.
