Don't be too concerned about joining the EU. You should be more concerned about fixing internal problems and the well being of the country's people. That should be your top priority stop following US footsteps.

If we hold a referendum, there is always danger of nationalist demagoguery and even direct election theft. On the other hand, if we vote to access EU, nationalists will, without a doubt, claim that it was rigged, and we'll once again have to give them something of value to calm them down.
