Does Romania want to start the dismemberment of Vojvodina? There are also Romanian "minorities" in this area as well. This could easily backfire on them. Besides pressing for Hungarian minority rights in Vojvodina, Hungary could also press for greater autonomy of Hungarians in Romania. -Brian Ghilliotti.

Related to my last comment, I put the word minorities in quotes because I get the impression that everyone in Vojvodina feels like a minority.

Serbs and Romanians get along fine. Serbia is Romania's only neighbor that hasn't gone to war with it. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about but thought you'd look smart writing something.

EU Reform

Possibly the time has come to reform all the countries in the EU. It is sad that one of the poorest countries in EU is able to waive a stick as their own people in their own country may be deprived.

So the Vlachs/Romanians in Serbia will decide what to call themselves.
(Ari Gold, 18 August 2016 13:26)

They have. They call themselves Vlachs (Vlah/Vlajna/Vlasi) and they've been calling them that long before the union of Wallachia and Moldavia decided to call itself "Romania" as a way of trying to prove greater territorial ancestry to the lands they claim as their own from the Hungarians.

Note also that Basescu is referring to those in Serbia's central-southern region, and not those in Vojvodina who call themselves, and are recognized by Serbia as, "Romanians". He knows he can only be specific but he also knows he's got no card to play in this because Vlasi consider Serbia their home, not Romania. Funny anecdote - they along with ethnic Serbs in the region complain about Romanian migrant workers coming there and refer to them as "cigani".

So much for ethnic solidarity.

Yes Romania could veto but if Europe threatens to return all the romanian gypsies flooding the EU Romania will think twice or even thrice before vetoing Serbia. The only card Romania has in its hands in the Joker!

Romanians stand by Serbia, and Serbia will make EU stronger and more balanced. No way RO would ever block Serbia. Sounds like wishful thinking by those that benefit from keeping these natural friends apart.

Dont get me wrong I hope Serbia is vetoed but making stupid statements then being unable to do anything is worse.

The agency added that the number of Vlachs in Serbia is "estimated" at a quarter of a million, but that only 35,330 people declared themselves as Vlachs in the last census, while 29,332 said they were ethnic Romanians.

So the Vlachs/Romanians in Serbia will decide what to call themselves. Neither the Serbian nor Romanian government should dictate to these people their own national identity. It is not up to anyone else. Certainly not up to the Romanian government to impose their will on Serbia. The people will determine what they want to be called. But hey, if this stalls Serbia on its EU path while Serbia still pays lip service to EU aspirations so it can compete for more funds from Brussels, then I am all for it. It's the best position to be in.

Vojvodina

The fact that they need to veto us to make us respect human rights is bad enough in and of itself.

But nationalists will come up with an excuse to not do as they say.
