Serbian constitution guarantees referendum if enough people or parliament members ask for it. Vucic can try to ignore it and keep breaking the law but does EU need a dictatorship for a member with people who are frustrated for not having a say about the membership? Vucic won in a coalition with 48% of votes out of about 54% people that voted. At best he can claim 20% of popular sentiment in Serbia.

Its a mute point, Serbia will probably not be an official member of the EU during Vucic's term in office. The next election will be a referendum on the EU, Serbia is doing just fine not joining the EU club.

Mr Vucic do you have democracy and free speech in Serbia? If yes then its not your choice to make, this decision belongs to Serbian people to make.Mr Vucic you are the one taking Serbia back to Milosevic era and that is stupid and dangerous.

...and there'll be no EU accession regardless of any initiatives ! May be somebody should tell it to the serbian people who still place their hope in this direction because in the last 10 days it has finally been buried.

It is very weak to suggest that the elections that put him in and established the current government has anything to do with Serbian desire for EU membership. Really, a referendum specifically asking about EU membership is really the only way to determine this. Obviously, Vucic does not want to confront the issue directly. But maybe he understands it doesn't matter, the EU is too obsessive about kicking Serbs around to care about its own existence. It's not hard to imagine the British could see this as well as the Serbs can.

Unlikely.
He will eat those words.

For your own sake man, don't be ashamed to admit you're albanian.

So your way of reasoning is that no rich EU countries will not benifit from EU membership and all poor will? Then why is Germany, France, Austria etc still in?
And why dont you just admit you're albanian? Probably because it would be ironic if you critisize Serbia for being poor when albanians are even poorer.

For your own sake man, don't be ashamed to admit you're Serbian.
Secondly, a dead beat EU Serbia still would benefit from, and someone like UK wouldn't benefit.
So, understand your leader is desperate not to let you Serbians ruin this opportunity.

Asked "about reports Russian President Vladimir Putin is using his influence in Serbia to push for a referendum there on the EU," Vucic replied: "I don't know anything about Putin but I know that some Serbian parties are openly calling for that."
"We won with an absolute majority. We'll do everything we can to reach this goal now. If we were to leave this path, Serbia would end up going the wrong way," Vucic, who is the leader of the SNS party, said of the April 24 parliamentary election, ahead of which "he made clear that his goal was to join the EU."
Vucic then spoke about "a lot of stupid and dangerous ideas in Serbia" adding that if there was a crisis here, "there would be a crisis in the whole region - old conflicts could be opened up again.
Why is Vucic so fearful of holding a referendum on EU membership when the EU seems to be coming apart ? Vucic was democratically elected right, elected by the majority of the people right, put in office by the majority right, then why not hold a referendum if the people so wish, right ?
Referendums are being held all the time & we should have the opportunity for our voice to be heard on the matter as well. Besides the EU is not just going to allow Serbia to enter if it realizes that many in Serbia are against EU membership, they won't allow us to export our anti-EU stance within the walls Brussels, they aren't idiots u know but maybe Vucic thinks so ?
Vucic had better be ready to give the people what they want.

Vucic is beginning to sound like Cameron. Did he not learn from project fear? It failed here in Britain. Why is he so adamant that people should not vote on EU membership? That is a crucial decision that should not be left to politicians, especially in regions where corruptions is rife.

I hope this isn't just a story for Germans, but I'm no longer hopeful...
