I have never once seen a rational explanation of the benefits of becoming an EU member. Any attempt to explain has been meagre and mostly relies on material already provided by the EU on its website. Switzerland is a good example of surviving outside the EU.
Despite all this noise about Brexit there were no tidal waves or earthquakes after the vote and no World War 3. On the Scots vetoing the plebiscite, they can dream on because you cannot ignore that vote to leave the EU.
There is no question that Serbs would vote against the EU, so the negotiations will be a lot tougher since Serbia will not cave in on many points.
If the EU is to survive then a looser confederation style of union maybe the go, but if not then bye bye EU. Regardless the EU as it stood prior to the vote is finished.

Glupic the first ( Idiot the first ) : spoke again : whatever you believe, support or not it is a shame to have a Prime Minister spitting on the face of his people : no respect for their voice ( first let them speak and dont presume nationalist predomnance ), second talk and be civilized as were the Brits. SHAME . SHAME . SHAME. Not sure if as per all statement Serbia deserves EU, but for sure it deserves a better leader that will stop lies and will offer a future and not retro communist dreams ( Nor China, Nor Russia not even UAS will ever bring anything.... just dream of a past that never existed neither.... ). Wake up people ....

I honestly would have to say that Vucic should stop all this nonsense once and for all. He is doing nothing but making himself look more and more like a fool. There is so much Serbia can do without the EU then with it. You can make jobs in your country with the right partners and the right moves without selling your identity to fake organizations like the EU! You can make your own world unions with people who have not bombed and killed your own people. You can make long lasting powerful partners like China, Russia, Korea, UAE and work import export firms with them. Serbia can be the most powerful nation in all of Europe but only if you stop selling your soul to these politicians in the EU who have already sold your nation and parts of your nations like Kosovo. I visit Serbia often and out of 3,560 people I have asked in 12 months Do you want Serbia to join the EU I have written down 84 that said Yes. No one can prosper more from the EU then Vucic. Come on Serbia wake up!

I can only hope that Vucic is saying what EU wants to hear.
He is certainly saying what Serbs want to hear by saying that he knows Serbs don't want EU and he hears them. Now the second bit about still forging ahead to EU I hope is only for EU's consumption.
If it isn't then he is very much a dictator which should be removed at the next election (provided he is still talking the same).
Serbia can be fast tracked bye the time new elections happen, especially if there are a few vacancies in the union but I hope not.

However, Serbia was not very smart by letting its country get bombed and becoming the pariah of Europe.

Yes,1999 Serbia was dumb(Milosevic),now 2016 getting heavyweight's China,UAE,Russia,EU to invest is smart, and as well Japan,Korea,Iran,USA,and Kazakhstan to invest is smart move forward.

I don't think that it matters. We are not joining the EU anyways. They just can't say it this point because we're getting funds and straightening out our country. I think that we are just pretending to move towards the EU. At least I hope so! But the scary thing is that the EU is keeping a lot of countries stable. How do you think Croatia will react if the EU falls apart? Then they'll have nothing to lose along with their ravaged economy. Scary with the EU and scary without.

China has more money but potentially Russia is able to invest more to Serbia. Because we have big special interest in the region while China needs incomes only. Russian companies invest much money abroad. Don’t forget that our currency reserves fell down because the government gave some USD 200 BLN. to the big companies and those money did not vanish this time. The biggest stop signal for the RF investments is always your own government. Can you chose a more national minded one? Please! The path to the EU is just a path and if the EU goes away, the path remains. There are many things on the way to the EU that Serbia wants and needs whether it wants to join the EU or not. And meanwhile, Serbia must have diplomatic relations with the EU. What better way to flatter the EU than to seek membership? Serbia is no more obliged to be serious about EU membership than those in charge of the EU who make it very clear that they want Serbia to recognize Kosovo as independent as a condition of membership.

The real wild card in all this is NATO. Many in BrExit spoke of NATO remaining a guarantor of British security. To what extent has NATO changed as a consequence of the structure of the EU?

BrExit was also endorsed by US presidential candidate Trump who has also said that as president he will have a close look at NATO to make some changes. And he wants better relations with Russia. If Trump wins the presidency, this could mean that a whole new order in Europe is in the works.

I was simply pointing out that China is now the world's largest economy and with Xi's recent visit to Serbia, China has solidified its interest in expanding its role in the Balkans which Serbia should take advantage of. Obviously I want Serbia to have greater use of its free trade agreement with Russia, would never place sanctions on Russia and value Russia's support at the UN. But I think the biggest room for growth in relationships is with China at the moment. But both are very welcomed as far as I'm concerned.

I want to give Vucic the benefit of the doubt here (as stupid as that may be). Serbia is obviously not the wealthy country that the UK is. Perhaps if we read between the lines we can see that the EU will have to slow down enlargement and Serbia can now drag its feet towards meeting stupid EU demands. All the while not publicly coming out against the EU for the sake of investments. I'm sure private investors will care a lot less about EU membership now that a country has left. But maybe for a country like Serbia still in transition, it does them good to see Serbia at least officially on the EU path.

In the meantime, deepen relations with Russia and especially China and bide time. EU funds will be harder to come by now that a major donor country is out. But try to get what's left and the EU will fall apart on its own. Good riddance.

Pure demagoguery. Referendum would be close, but I think that EU would win (we saw the alternative in the 90's).

Still, this is only because the majority of the people flat out don't know what European Union is, and believe the conspiracy theorists like Seselj who claim that it attempts to enslave our people without a shred of evidence.
In light of this, I believe that we should join without referendum to avoid unnecessary risks.
Fascists will claim it's rigged anyway.

1) Please read the words again and again.
2) Please serve yourself with your favorite booze
3) Please tell honestly, does a single word what he said make sense, one way or the other.

Come on Serbia wake up!

svabo,
However, Serbia was not very smart by letting its country get bombed and becoming the pariah of Europe.

As are the people who voted for him, including you, Deda.
