You had me, but lost it at "Croatians of Serbian decent".

You can put lipstick on a pig, but at the end of the day, it's still a pig.

Once he learned of the crimes being committed by the nazis, Archbishop Stepinac put his life on the line to save people, especially serbs. He supported an independent Croatia, especially from serb oppression after WW1 under the kingdom of yugoslavia which the serbs controlled, but he was by no measure a fascist. He was threatened constantly by the nazis for helping Serbs, Jews, and Roma. He was imprisoned and tortured. In fact, most Croatians were of the same belief during WW2. Hence the Partizans which were first formed in Croatia by Croatians. It's time serbians get their Stepinac history from Croatians of serbian descent who were actually there instead of far away belgrade which has a long reputation of inflaming things in the former yugoslavia for the purposes of enlarging greater serbia. Please see Dr. Esther Gitman interview regarding this subject on youtube Link http://www.croatia.org/crown/articles/10787/1/Esther-Gitmans-interview-2016-about-Archbishop-Alojzije-Stepinac-and-his-role-in-saving-the-Jews-in-Croatia.html

Strange as it may sound, from the start of the various rehabilitation debates, there was never a shred of proof beside hearsay. We have taken a leap of faith to rehabilitate Draza and Nedic, now they're taking one to rehabilitate Stepinac. We are exactly the same, us and Croatians, but the problem is both sides are trying to fight fire with fire.

Just because your opponent decorated his war criminals as heroes doesn't mean that you have to.

Why all this obfuscation about who Stepinac was? He wasn't just a "Croatian Catholic cleric". He was the Archbishop of Zagreb from 1937 to 1953 after which he became a Cardinal. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

He was a monster.
