Sorry, my bad. The 5 Euro story was with Macedonians, they are even worse. In Serbia "my" standard fine is "jedan crveni", so it's 7 - 8 Euro, used to be 10.

The 5-Euro story wasn't even with the car, that was in Tabanovci on the train few years ago. Macedonians do not stamp American passports in Gevgelija - than issue a 50 Euro "fine" in Tabanovci because "there is no stamp in passport".

The 50 Euro can be reduced to 5, see below.

On one other occasion, that was in Sv. Naum, the Macedonian customs did not wanted to let me out of the country unless I do something. I did NOT do what they wanted, they still let me out - but were disappointed.

Such abuse and corruption has to be stopped.

The worst border procedure is in Ukraine but that shouldn't be an excuse for others.

Yep, they ask me (USA plates) for 50 - 100 Euro. Once I show them in my U.S. passport that I was born in Russia - the "fine" is 5 Euro. Of course, they can easily determine it from my accent. Some even can say exactly what area of Russia I was born. That's why 5 Euro and not 50.

But never the less, it's a corruption. Much worse than in Ukraine where I have usually 60% chances to talk myself out of ticket, in Russia and the U.S. the rate is 100%. In Serbia it's ZERO.

And I do not have a Ferrari.

No problem, just pay a bribe and you can park anywhere you want. Balkan police always stop cars with foreign plates trying to get money from foreigners and expats coming home. It's happened to me several times in Serbia and Bosnia. Police are corrupt like no other place in Europe.
