Having recently spent some time in Croatia, what I predominately found was a small country with a lot of disquiet about identity. With strong regionalism and even stronger regionalist identity [Cultural, Ethnic and Political] in Dalmatia, Istria, Rijeka or Fiume, and with former displaced Serbs slowly returning to their ancestral homes and communities in contested territories such as in Krajina and Slavonia, it will be interesting to see how much smaller Croatia could become.

You make a valid point about the regionalism and regional identity being quite strong - culturally for sure, and politically to a lesser extent (more so in Istria and Slavonia). However, generally speaking the regional identity doesnt superceed the national Croatian identity (of course there is the odd excpetion here and there). I highly doubt the country would break-up along these lines, greater regional autonomy or a federal system are more plausable scenarios - at least in the more immediate future. But you never know, lets wait and see...

Perhaps the Ghegs and Tosks can also separate and form their own countries. They would be better off, no prospect of inter-ethnic violence or blood feuds repeating again just like the Ponzi or Pyramid Scheme in 1997!
