This is a good step, and it will decrease the number of casual smokers. It won't stop the true nicotine addict. In the US, there are smoking bans everywhere. However, there remain many truly committed smokers. Those smokers will keep smoking. They will spend the last dollar on cigarettes, even buying cigarettes instead of food!
The next step is to place higher taxes on cigarettes. That will remove more smokers. After that, the rates will stabilize around 20%, say 10 years down the road.

Compared to Albania? Nice to see some people are still happy with the little and simple things. Like my little nephew jumps around when I give him a 2 Euro coin.

This means preparing to enter UE.
This means killing Serbia and giving Serbia in to the mouth of the Shark.
Serbian people doesn't deserve that, great people and great country.
Serbia leaving the lastest nice moment of his independant entity.
I feel sad.
I hope that i am mistaken and Serbia won't enter UE.
The futur will say.
I love Serbia and Serbians

I agree Niko and made no comment about the fairness or otherwise of a smoking ban. My point is that if you pass a law it should be because you believe it is the right thing to do and intend to uphold it. Restaurants and bars are able to give people a choice, workplace smoking is another matter as there is little choice but to show up at work.

@Ned Taylor.
The key is passing laws that doesn't erode or violate other peoples rights.
I am sorry to say, but this law makes criminals out of law abiding citizens. Laws shouls exists to serve the people, not to increase government revenue. Government has no business legislating behavior between consenting adults. If I as a smoker have a business and want to cater to other smokers in a bar or club why government has saying where we can smoke? What about the property rights ?
Similar law passed in Albania 2-3 years ago. Overnight law abiding citizens became "criminals" and businesses were being fined astronomical amounts...do you think that money was invested in hospitals or to buy expensive vehicles for government ministers? Take a guess.
So far, the only country offering a fair solution to all smokers and non smokers is Switzerland. Restaurant owners are mandated to put up a sign at the entrance if their facility is a smoking or non smoking one and let their customers choose.

I would be very happy if you would stop your totally unrelated off-topic comments on any post (I noticed some similar ones). If you want to write something, you can tell the honorable readers how the smoke ban is handled in Romania.

In the long term, this ban will reduce the number of tobacco addicts which is rather high in Serbia, compared to other European countries.

for Yugoslavija , our minimum salary was suposed to grow up from 1050 lei ( 240 euro ) to 1200 lei ( 280 euro ) and they decided to grow up at 1250 lei ( 292 euro ) link http://economie.hotnews.ro/stiri-finante-20694576-surse-guvernul-sindicatele-convenit-cresterea-salariului-minim-1-250-lei-1-mai.htm

I think this is a big progress , the page is turning , Croatia have 400 euro , Hungary 330 euro . In 2017 it will grow up at 1500 lei ( 350 euro )

I am very happy for this because Croatia and Hungary stagnate but the most important is that in 2016 it is 300 euro

The key is enforcing the ban. I sat on a Commission in Bosnia that met in the Joint Institutions Building along with various deputy ministers who had voted for a smoking ban in public places (including that very building). All but one of the six regularly lit up during the meetings. Serbia needs to do things because they believe them to be right and then enforce them, be that anti corruption or a smoking ban. Don't simply introduce a law to appease the EU and then pay lip service to it. The same of course applies to all aspirant countries but the article is about Serbia.
