This is bizarre on another level. If the EU is such an integral structure, then shouldn't it have its own military treaties within the EU? Why depend on a treaty that is older than the EU itself?

Dissolve NATO for a new system of military treaties within the EU and then form new treaties between the US and the EU and the rest of friendly non-EU countries.

This would do a lot to placate the Russian Federation who tend to see NATO as being an engine of US military power in the area. The US needs to extricate itself from European military challenges where it has no natural interests.

NATO is not a requirement for entry into the EU.

This is propaganda.

If it were a requirement, then why the courting?

Serbia will never join NATO.

There is no compelling reason to join NATO. They are surrounded by NATO countries and will be nice and safe (and financially better off as they negotiate transit fees, etc).

The handwriting has been on the wall for some time now: NATO membership is an unwritten condition for joining the EU. However, for the intellectually challenged such as the current applicant, it require being hit on the head by a 2 by 4 in order to get the message.

Oh Lord of the Dance you amuse me to no end with your simplistic messages. The only intellectually challenged person is you. Based on your theory Austria and Sweden should leave the EU then reapply because they are not NATO members LOL.
I note that Albania is a NATO member so it is hoped that NATO has put aside sufficient funding to feed all those donkeys required by the Albanian light armored cavalry.

This doesn't even make any sense. There are members of NATO that will never become a part of the EU, like the United States. Should the US have veto power over who is eligible to join the EU? Should any non-EU member who is a member of NATO have veto power?

Paul,
A basic logic lesson may clear up matters for you: "if A then B" is not equivalent to "if B then A".
It may not make sense to you that NATO membership will be required before joining the EU, but that does not invalidate the fact. Ask yourself when was the last time a country joined the EU without first being a member of Nato. You will have to take off your shoes and socks to be able to count that high. You see, the U.S. plans far in advance, that is why Serbia is often confused. NATO, led by the U.S. can prevent any country from becoming an EU member and Serbia can't do a damn thing about it. It's as if Serbia is playing Checkers while the U.S. is playing Chess.

The EU increasingly looks not only bankrupt but disoriented too. Didn't the Soviet Union in its last days look like this?

"Great overlap". Yes, both organizations are America's bitches and defenders of a rogue capitalist system. Remember children, any future conflict with Russia will be fought on European soil and in the ME, not on American soil.
