This is an important milestone. Geopolitical realities, however, must be taken into account. As one of the posters articulated, Serbia has close ties to the Russian Federation. Say what you will, however, Tito was a champion in the brinksmenship of balancing the east and west to the maximum benefit of the former Yugoslavia. It's a shame that a governmental system wasn't established to continue the prosperity and neutrality of the FYR. That is all water under the bridge now. Serbia needs to find a way make the maximum economic growth (i.e. bring in outside money, as in exports), ingenuity (of which Serbia is not lacking), economic prosperity to the people of Serbia and the Freedom of Travel. This successful future may lie in the EU or outside of it. As long as the Serbian people prosper.

What kind of a union will Serbia join...?
A union of countries which are politically divided on issues which range from sanctions on Russia to border fences to stop illegal immigration to countries like England which seek a referendum from its people to exit the EU...
The economic future for Serbia is within the EU, but what about the political future, how do Serbian political issues fit within the EU? There is peackeepers in Serbia's southern province in Kosovo and also in Bosnia, Serbia also has historical and cultural ties with Russia which may become a political issue within the EU in the future. The political issues associated with Serbian accession into the EU are small, but they are still significant... I believe Serbia is very well balanced and diplomacy in Serbia is exceptional and the political issues can be suppressed, but the union which Serbia joins will still be politically divided on many issues, especially those concerning Kosovo's status and the politically divided BiH...
The EU is a United economic union, socially divided union with the newly built border fences and a politically unstable union with countries considering leaving the Union, austerity unrest in Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy and the sanctions on Russia, so with Serbia joining the union just adds to an ever more politically divided union, but "maybe" an economically stronger and United union...
The EU of today will be different to the EU of 2020...
