EU to intensify external Schengen border checks

The EU is a failed experiment.

The EU, trying to unite Europe as America united the states. Trying desperately to create a united Europe....

Kings and queens have been trying to do this for centuries, the roman empire, Alexander the Great and Hitler have all failed in this quest for a united Europe. It will never happen and the end if schengen is proof, the migrants are proof that europe is divided, the fences are proof europe is divided... there is no fences in the USA between states...

A united Europe is far off its mark, England does not want EU currency, it wants its pound, but every state in the USA agrees to use the US dollar. The EU will never be like the USA...

The EU is a fantasy, the governments act like it exists, but in reality, these states are countries and their country comes first over the union, the country is number one, borders are number one, their own foreign policy is number one, the union will always come second, which shows that Europe has not changed in centuries and they never will. A land of different cultures, languages and values, not a union of harmony and multiculturalism...

The EU has failed, show your id, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars...!

Nikola Novakovic: Any comments about the article or do you just want to have a general rant about history? As a British citizen I am very happy that the UK did not sign up to Schengen and also has a Euro opt out, but that does not mean that I want the UK to isolate itself by quitting the EU.

Your politicians have been telling its people of the strength and wealth of “Great Britain” to the point where it has convinced them that it’s a real power both economically and militarily.
They have done such a good job that when it comes to joining the EU the general populace are opposed to it. Cameron is only talking about a plebiscite simply because there is overwhelming support and it would be political suicide to do anything else.
The reality is if the UK does elect to leave the EU all those privileges of free movement of trade etc. will cease. It will not be business as usual and unlike Serbia, which is a small place and does not matter, the UK has plenty to lose. You have to remember that the UK was at the forefront of forming the EU and its corporations have benefitted greatly especially since the fall of communism.
The reality is that David Cameron and all your politicians, past and present, know this fact very well and would have signed up years ago. They have painted themselves into a corner.
Your choice will be join or leave.

SJ: The choice is in fact stay or leave not join or leave. This is not pedantry but a serious point. Were we not to already be in the EU it would be very difficult for politicians to persuade the people to join in the current circumstances. However, we are already members and the status quo often holds sway in a referendum because people are worried about the uncertainties of change, witness the Scottish independence referendum.
