Vucic party has a huge majority not a plurality. 63% of Serbs say Kosovo is independent. All Serbian athletes are now competing against Kosovo. Vucic brought up a vote to remove Kosovo during his election campaign and it was completeley uncontroversial. His party's website had an interview with him where he talked about removing Kosovo from the constitution. He said the same to wsj. The dveri party campaigned as a the official party of the soc and got no seats in parliament. Neither did the party that put Kosovo in the constitution in the first place.

Unlike Serbs Germans do keep their word. That's why Serbs go to live there and not Russia.

Why do you even want to join the EU when you share none of its values and are antagonistic towards the Community? I don't remember any German paramilitary leaders running soccer clubs and shooting off AK47s in celebration. Serbia, with its rampant organized crime and joke of an economy, resembles a African country led by war lords more than it does a Western state. Anyway, it's pointless to preach because most Serbs are made too dumb and blind by their unreasonable nationalism and pride (in defeat and failure) to listen to any opposing opinions. A final bit of advice though - you need to face the reality that if the EU lets you join, in 20 years the earliest, it will be without Kosovo. Kosovo is lost forever. Kosovo is Serbia no more. You're going to have to pick another territory where you were humiliated in battle to call the "Heart of Serbia". Maybe Knin? Oh wait, that's lost too. Since you don't have too many battle wins under your belt, you can always turn to your "brave" victories against the fierce civilians of Srebrenica, Skabrnje, Vukovar, or Sarajevo. After all, it's not easy killing both a woman and her child in a bread line.

Last year Germany said that Serbia can only join the EU if they recognise Kosovo. A couple days ago, Thaci stated that Serbia has recognised an independent Kosovo and now following that, Germany finally decides to allow chapters to begin. What an amazing chain of events!

pointless, what makes serbs think they will get in the EU if problems aren't solve yet. Serbia will be in EU when a "not Milosevic government" run serbia and solve all the problems otherwise keep dreaming. Vucic is the one that 20 years ago he said, "for every serbs i will kill 100 muslims." He thinks that the international community does not know that?

Wall Street Journal article.

It can be a mistatement by an inexperienced politician or could have been said for Western consumption.

It could have been a test balloon for domestic consumption? But then why say it to WSJ?

It still needs to happen..... and it still needs to be approved by a majority bearing in mind that this issue is so simple to get Serbs inflamed

Its safe to say it would be the most important vote in their history. The SOC would use its special powers to mobilize commoners to vote "No" and whoever initiated it would be demonized as Vuk Brankovic

Then there are factors that go into what would make a vote even possible

Timing. If Vucic were to attempt now, it is safe to say his govt would fall since he has only a plurality

Trust is next. Most distrust EU due to endless conditions. It is predictable people will say: How do we know they wont have even more conditions - perhaps with RS?

Its predictable that if this were to happen, it would be close to the end (and that is 5-10 years away) bc why would any Serb vote yes right now???

Then there is Pristina. Each thing it does to antagonize Serbia between now & then casts another future "No" vote

Then there is Necessity.

First, necessity for Serbia to do it. Will it really be a condition?

Then the necessity for Brussels to keep Serbia happy in the Migrant & upcoming ISIS situation

Next is future disposition of EU & its debt problem

Next is the diaspora voice

etc, etc

Germans and others have been clear that the first chapter is chapter 35 on Kosovo and 35 is never closed until Serbia holds a vote and Kosovo claim is removed from its constitution as no member can claim another member!

Germany, and the EU as a whole want a perpetual deal between Albanians and Serbians. With that being said... they will make sure these problems are put to rest once and for all. I personally think the world is tired of both sides bickering about every little thing that goes on there. I highly doubt that Serbia will become a member of EU until Kosovo gets a recognition, or at least is removed from Serbias constitution. We will have to wait and see, anything can happen!

It's worth noting that whilst Germany has a big voice in the EU there are in fact 28 members all of whom need to agree before any chapters are opened. Mrs Merkel is not in a position to speak for all 28 countries and I would be surprised if she did.
