Belgrade to unveil monument to Gavrilo Princip on June 28

Hmm, now here's an interesting attempt at making an argument.

The person widely regarded as the spark that ignited the powder keg of war is blamed for the deaths of - well who cares about the number, let's just inflate it to something large to make a point - people. Of course if we factor out the belligerent foreign policy of Austria and the expansionist adventurism of Germany which had planned for such a moment years in advance, not to mention the completely independent decision of the Ottoman Empire to exterminate most of its minority population, we still can't put the blame on one 19 year old man who rode out most of the war languishing in an Austrian jail, and whose actions largely succeeded on sheer luck and the stupidity of the Archduke's driver.

"Partizan" really needs to research his/her username since Tito praised Princip as a progenitor to Yugoslavia. Even Princip himself was a member of a Bosnian extremist group dedicated to the South Slavic cause. But since Partizan's other comments here are indicative of someone more akin to ISIS than Brotherhood and Unity, I think it's safe to say we're not really dealing with an informed person here.

Try reading up on your basic history before you vomit all over your keyboard next time. If one man was responsible for the deaths of so many people, he would have been far more powerful than he was.

No statue is deserved for this person.

Austria started WWI and an Austrian immigrant to Germany started WWII. Nothing more really needs to be observed.

This is a really funny, the heavenly people still persist with delusions that they somehow resist evil empires and fight for freedom and justice. Gavrilo Prinicp stood for south Slavic expansionism, he did not strike a blow for the poor, or for downtrodden, he was ultimately a fascist. Of course, we got to learn how much the Southern Slvas really loved one another 80 years later, so who knows, maybe it'd had been a lot better for them to remain part of Austria-Hungary.

I will echo the sentiment, before you make a commment and try to compare Princip to the SS and other stupid remarks, do your research.

The leader of the Black Hand was Dragoljub Dimitrejevic aka APIS who arranged for the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, it was no secret that Ferdinand wanted to Anniliate Serbia from the map especially for fear of the annexation of Bosnia/Herzegovina at that point of time in history. Gavrilo Princip was one of ten assassasins involved in the attempt which comprised of all ethnic groups including Muslim, one of the assasins actually over threw a grenade which forced the motorcade to take another route. Regardless, all the conspriators were tried and sentenced and convicted, Princip was spared the death penalty but eventually died in prison due to Typhus. APIS was eventaully arrested and shot by firing squad under the direction of Prince Alexander Karageorgevic in Salonika Front in Greece. There is still no compelling evidence that that the Serbian governement was involved in the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, but the Serbian military officers were involved which included Tankosic and Apis, the same group responsible for the brutal slaying of King Alexander Obrenovic and his wife at the palace in Belgrade.

Oh the stupidity of Serbian heroism is being rewarded by none other than Vulin.

Knowing the belligerent nature of Austria, some 'heroic' Serbs go and poke it. I am sure if we asked any of the Serbian victims in WWI if Princip deserves a monument, they would say no. What was it, 1/3 of the population? Serbia would have been a nation of 20 million today probably. Probably with more territory too.

AH was already in decay and it was question when it will fall. A destiny gave that not an easy task to fight and defeat the empire to Serbs as we did the same in first Balkan war before that with the Ottoman empire. After ww1 it was something to be proud to be Serb. In 20th century we faced four empires: Ottoman, Austria-Hungary, Third Reich and the most powerful of them all- NATO alliance. In the other hand Albanins were in all conflicts our enemies and the sided with already mentioned empires. They prospered and we suffered, but it must never be any doubt about our and their role in history.
