AY -

I was educated in the US but can assure you that I'm well aware of the cultural bias and compromised media that one encounters here. Also, I have lots of grievances with US foreign policy that I won't get into here. When I tout Western government over that in other spheres, I'm mainly thinking of places like Australia, NZ, Canada, Denmark, Holland and Finland. You're no doubt aware, but the UN (however biased toward the West, but hopefully not badly) periodically ranks the world's countries according to education, healthcare, human rights, press freedom - overall quality of life. You can guess which countries come out on top. Maybe media in Russia and China say otherwise, but I think it only fair to regard their media with as much suspicion as they regard ours. I'm not saying Western government is great and that every country should aspire to be like the US, UK, Canada, Germany or whomever - I'm just saying that some data would suggest that quality of life tends to be better in countries living under Western style government.

Regards,
Nenad

Yelstin did not die in office.
(Amnesty Yugoslavia, 6 April 2015 12:01)

I did not say Yeltsin died in office :)
----------

In contrast to the US/Nuland intervention in the Ukraine, Russians in recent history have shown the capability of peacefully replacing incompetent leaders.
(Amnesty Yugoslavia, 6 April 2015 12:01)

I know from prior experience that logical connections are a bit challenging for you, but where is the contrast?! I agree though that might be a miracle for Russia, but in the US the peaceful replacement of leaders (whether competent or incompetent) is normal!
----------

According to your parroting of idiotic US commentary, Putin is to be compared with Hitler;
(Amnesty Yugoslavia, 6 April 2015 12:01)

You mean according to a certain idiotic "Amnesty Yugoslavia" (another one, I guess, not you). It was him/her who provided as the only criteria being "popular". Hitler certainly satisfied that criteria, like God Vlad the Great.
----------

at the same time, your model nation, the US, is the one and only benchmark for government despite the fact its military has insanely run amok in Iraq, Afghanistan, instigated regime change in Libya with bombs, sparked the creation of ISIS with regime change in Syria...the list is endless
(Amnesty Yugoslavia, 6 April 2015 12:01).

If anything the above proves that the US is evil to other people, not the Americans lol In the country where I live, I first care about myself, then others, if at all ;)

You asked why Putin was in power for 15 years? He is popular.
(Amnesty Yugoslavia, 3 April 2015 11:47)

Sure, Hitler was popular, too. Sadly, we all know where that led Germany and the rest of Europe. I don't wish that for Russia.

George Washington was popular, as well, but him deciding not to stay in power for a 3rd, 4th... Nth term to his death was perhaps one of his most important contributions to make America a superpower. And when Roosevelt violated that unwritten precedent of max of 8 years in power, Americans ammended the constitution to not allow it to happen again, because regardless of how succesful somebody is (Roosevelt led America outside the Great Depression and to the victory of WW2) power corrupts and leaders have to rotate to keep a nation moving forward.

But I totally get it that those concepts are alien to most Russians used to see for centuries their leaders die in office and they don't understand the negative impact that has on the long-term progress of their nation.

Dear Nenad,

You appear to be a pleasant and nice fellow living in the US who asks questions for which you sincerely lack reliable information. Your query and knowledge about the current situation in Afghanistan, apart from my sarcastic comments, begs the curious question: did you also obtain most of your formal education in the US, or in another country?

Are these huge migrations taking Indians to Russia in large numbers? Are lots of Chinese moving to Afghanistan or Iran?

Historically, the indigenous population of Russia, Afghanistan, and Iran vigorously defended their land from invaders. Sadly, the native populations of the USA and Canada have suffered genocidal consequences from moving populations. Mass movement to America initiated by Europeans in the 19th and 20th centuries followed by Asian migrations were driven by exploitation of resources and riches owned by others.

Nuland is hardly a comparable figure to Vlad.

As someone who has flown on Boeing, Airbus and Embraer planes, I don’t see anything earth shattering about Embraer. I think it’s fair to say that Apple and Google have qualities that set them apart from the competition.

You do make a fair point about population size in India and China – and I thought about that, too – but are these huge migrations taking Indians to Russia in large numbers? Are lots of Chinese moving to Afghanistan or Iran? I don’t recall seeing too many Brazilians in Belgrade when I was last there. There are some Chinese, but just the other day, B92 quoted a Chinese official lamenting the departure of Chinese from Serbia.

(Nenad, 2 April 2015 04:17) as someone living in the US, how come I see Chinese, Indians, Russians and Brazilians moving here in such large numbers?
---
Countries such as China and India are the most populated nations on earth. Movements of populations from high to low density is common in any ecosystem. If the US had more than 1 billion people, more would be leaving the US.

Why are Apple and Google American companies and not Brazilian, or Russian?
---
The same reason Embraer is Brazilian and Gazprom is Russian. Corporations originate in different countries.

Why do people buy up the USD and not the Ruble?
---
People buy and sell both the USD and ruble . For example, in the past few weeks the value of the ruble has increased ~18%: more were buying the ruble, than selling the ruble. Currencies fluctuate.

Why has Putin been in power for 15 years with seemingly no end in sight - with an estimated net worth of $70B?
---
He has had extremely high approval ratings in his political jurisdiction. I don't know his net worth. However, his clash in "sphere's of influence" with the US and politicians such as Vitoria Nuland (notably, also in power in the US state department for more than 15 years) are associated with a mis-information campaign. Be cautious with the information that others feed you.

Vucic once again stated that the Hague's decision to set Seselj free - after more than 11 years in custody without a verdict - had the goal of "bringing down the government, the SNS, and its approval rating."

When this government will be brought down it's not because the West hates it so much, but because it's corrupt and treasonous to the max and because Vucic promised all and kept nothing, and while there were deluded people who fell for this show, now even the last donkey realizes that Alexander Vucic can not walk over water, despite former claims by him that indicated this, and everyone now gets the idea that the future of Serbia looks darker than ever, and if he puts out ridiculous conspiracy theories like this it must be 2 minutes to midnight for him and his western handlers who alledgedly fear Vucic so much.

I'm sorry but when Vucic's comments sound more ridiculous than Seselj's actions, one really has to question how the SNS, a party with virtually no opposition to it, could come to this rationalization. If the old Duke is that much of a problem for Vucic, pack him up and, like unwanted merchandise, send him back to the Hague. Here's a man who likes to take credit for making "tough decisions" on Kosovo for the sake of some "European future" or whatever the Hell he refers to, suddenly trip over his own words and common sense when when an external judicial body is willing to take back an unwanted relic from the 1990s.

I have spent a long time in Serbia and very much love the place and its people (without generalising too much, every country has its bad eggs), which is why I am so annoyed by how those in charge here are not successfully held accountable and always manage to snake their way out of real issues. Amazing that you didn't know Mr Vucic, everyone else knew from the start that his release was temporary to receive treatment, bearing in mind that he is still on trial:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/06/world/europe/vojislav-seselj-on-trial-for-war-crimes-is-offered-temporary-release.html?ref=topics

and he also broke his conditions of release (no political activity, voluntarily return which he denounced as soon as arriving). Of course, again the Serbian media fails to critically analyse the issue. Why are only Vucic's interpretation of the events posted and not what actually happened/what was written?

In response to:

"Initially they asked that we spy on him, see where he eats, where he sleeps..."

perhaps that was because you agreed to:

'The government also promised that Seselj “will have no contact with witnesses or victims and that he will return to the Tribunal when ordered to do so”.' http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/article/icty-grants-early-release-to-seselj

Vucic once again stated that the Hague's decision to set Seselj free - after more than 11 years in custody without a verdict - had the goal of "bringing down the government, the SNS, and its approval rating."

Amnesty Yugoslavia,

I understand some might debate the advantages of living in the West, or Western style countries such as Australia or NZ. That's fine. If a person prefers, say Russia to Canada, or China to Denmark, hey - to each his own. But I do have to ask: as someone living in the US, how come I see Chinese, Indians, Russians and Brazilians moving here in such large numbers? Why are Apple and Google American companies and not Brazilian, or Russian? Why do people buy up the USD and not the Ruble? Why has Putin been in power for 15 years with seemingly no end in sight - with an estimated net worth of $70B?

Amnesty Yugoslavia

AY –

Victoria Nuland is hardly a comparable figure to Vlad. And I can assure you, her fortune is nowhere near $70B – even though her salary might very well work out to be worth more than his when you get down to Rubles:Dollars.

Finally, I agree that lots of people both buy and sell all kinds of currency, but how many states stockpile Rubles in their foreign currency reserves?

Pozdrav,

I never wrote no "other considerations". Those are the writings of Reader.

With only 1500 characters, one can not cover all of the reasons and considerations for population movement. Population studies are complex and diverse. I did provide the most appropriate succinct general response. I personally know many people that have not only moved to the US, but American colleagues that have moved to Shanghai, Bombay and Moscow for business reasons. Covering all the reasons for complex population movements in this forum is impossible, notwithstanding Reader's labels.

Are these huge migrations taking Indians to Russia in large numbers? Are lots of Chinese moving to Afghanistan or Iran?
---

Historically, the indigenous population of Russia, Afghanistan, and Iran vigorously defended their land from invaders. Sadly, the native populations of the USA and Canada have suffered genocidal consequences from moving populations. Mass movement to America initiated by Europeans in the 19th and 20th centuries followed by Asian migrations were driven by exploitation of resources and riches owned by others.

Nuland is hardly a comparable figure to Vlad.
---

You asked why Putin was in power for 15 years? He is popular. & yes Nuland, a right wing neocon, is unpopular, unelected, and has kept a political position at State irrespective of Dem or GOP loss in elections.

And I can assure you, her fortune...

Thank you Nenad. No I am not bganon but I do live in Belgrade. I have spent a long time in Serbia and very much love the place and its people (without generalising too much, every country has its bad eggs), which is why I am so annoyed by how those in charge here are not successfully held accountable and always manage to snake their way out of real issues. It amazes me how little people do to stop them, its not like they successfully provide for their people (ok there are difficulties facing Serbia, not all its own fault, but those in charge could appear to be supporting the people instead of themselves)!
