«For 150 years ( not 500 !) they existed under the Ottomans …»

In fact it was a misprint and I meant some 230-250 years because before the 16 century Ottoman Empire was the safest place for the Christians especially for the Orthodox ones. It saved them from the Inquisition trials and the 100 years of wars during the Reformation. Orthodox Christianity was the dominating religion of the Ottomans before the 16-th century while all those horror stories about the Muslim atrocities belong to the 17 – 19 centuries. They were first inspirited by Vatican after the overthrown emperor of Byzantine flew there in 1453. But when in 1613 the west was able to bring to power in the Great Horde their Romanov puppets the Ottomans were demonized the way it is made with Russia today. New history books were written together with the Holy Writ. Like other Europeans Serbs were inside it all. But the famous Sultans had Slav routes , most likely the Macedonians born and buried in Adrianople. Ottomans were an autonomous part of the Horde so for centuries Russia didn’t interfere the Balkans. Even the Kosovo battles including 1389 were home affairs of the Horde where all the participants on both sides were Orthodox Christians.

„but they don't want to be like Russians“

Nobody says that they must be like Russians … more than they already are. Luigi there’s a big difference between the Serbs and Russians that talk to you and the average Serbs and Russians. Those who contact with you already tie themselves with the West. So be careful with the figures. As far as I know the proportion is 70/30 in favor of Russia while with the elites must be opposite 30/70.

Out of the Slavs inhabiting Europe Serbs have closest to ours mentality and spirit. This is why they have to suffer like the Russians from the same center of power. I think that 4 main points characterize a nation – culture, religion, language and territory. You must know that in the church we use the same language and it was the official language of the Great Horde.

I think that in early 16-th century most Slavs spoke more or less the same language including the Catholics. Serbs were always in the Ottoman zone of responsibility. But after the split between the White Horde and the Ottomans in mid-16 century Serbs got problems. For 150 years ( not 500 !) they existed under the Ottomans who only since then became hostile to the Christians.

So for last 350 years we had very differing history with the Serbs. Russians boiled in their own juice while Serbs lived on the crossroad of the Balkans. So it would be stupid to try to revive the old unity in the 21 century. But both people keep the genetic memory of each other.

Dear Rote
Lately i had a conversation with a Serb who works here but returns often at home and he told me that his country is a 50 /50 east/west divide,,,
but the elites are 90/10 in favour of Eu integration,,,,and there are huge differencies in the various region,,,certainly the majority is against Nato but for the Serbs Nato=USA , Eu is another thing and moreover he told me that they have a sentiment of gratitude for Russia but they don't want to be like Russians...

Serbia is one of the few states to celebrate the date in the Russian calendar and besides ( together with the English and the Montenegrins ) Serbs were almost the only fighting nation on the continent before May 1944. So logically in case Toma is coming best if we conduct a joint parade of brothers in arms. It could compensate the discrimination of 1945 when Yugoslavian partisans were not allowed to storm Berlin. The bad news is that this trip will not improve the situation about the neutrality of Serbia. In 2015 it planned to have 22 drills and other joint things with NATO and only 2 with Russia. So the trip can also look like a moral compensation for the treason of the Serbian elites. They have to explain something to their pro-Russian majority …
