Whilst I applaud any country for taking its own future in its hands, I think one or two contributors are unaware of the reality of Iceland's position. In order to be part of the Schengen Zone and to have access to EU markets they have made sacrifices of their own, not least allowing tariff free access to EU goods and services. This is also the case with Norway and Switzerland who have given up a degree of sovereignty in order to trade freely with the EU. Going it alone for any European country is an honourable act but let's not kid ourselves that it comes without a cost. If you put national pride ahead of money then you have my total respect but be sure that there is a financial price to pay.

@Bulgar of Ohrid-Got your point. Unfortunately, Europe has Serbia and Macedonia in their hands like a toy. Join the EU under our terms or will steer minority to give you constant pain. That is the difference. Good to see that rest of the Europe is slowly starting to feel the same pain that Balkan did. They thought it can never happen to them.

There is a massive tide in the entire continent of Europe turning against the EU project for a wide variety of different reasons. As the EU behaves more like one single country, EUroskepticism goes through the roof. Except in Serbia. The only country in Europe right now that doesn't even have an anti-EU party in parliament right now.

Brussels is not popular anywhere in Europe. But at least they can feel at safe and at home in Belgrade where they will be welcomed with open arms by the political elite. How sad

Iceland is not very significant in EU terms. There's many cities and even a few towns that are much bigger.

Iceland has the advantage of being well resourced - as long as they don't mess up the finances again can do very well alone.

I am not sure that the same applies to other candidate countries.

Is Ari going to be the bus driver taking them from the airport to the Hotel Moskva?

Can I just congratulate Iceland on avoiding eternal bondage within that corrupt organisation. The sooner our resident muppets give up on that project the better for all in Serbia.

that is excellent news from Iceland.
Now all you stooges in Belgrade take note; you represent the intetrests of the Serbian people not the EU kleptocrats

Iceland's authorities announced late on Thursday that the country's bid to join the EU as a member had been withdrawn.

This is coming after this small nation refused the demands by the IMF/EU to bail out its banks and instead went even further by handing out to banksters long prison sentences. One can only admire Iceland's leadership.
Our illustrious leaders have sold us down the river for the sake of their own careers and perceptions of importance. They have been bought by a foreign power and are quite simply Traitors to our country. Perhaps one day history will remember them as such.

U don't need EU if you are already schengen and free market members! They are trading freely with Europe and their citizens can live in other EU countries if they choose to.

The governments of Macedonia and Serbia will have its people believe that they will burn in hell if they don't join the EU.. It's like a broken record, the knightmare you can not wake from.. How do the masses accept this is beyond belief.. Will the people ever wake up ever again? What a miserable lot.. No self respect..
