Croatia should not have been let into the EU.

Maybe this woman will mess up sufficiently to bring the message home to Croats that they have too pompous view of themselves and not yet come to terms with the evils of their fascist past.

This is a typical comment from a downright silly person. What extreme wealth in its soil??? Croatia has a very small percentage of arable land. You talk about the sea, well what about it? The earth is 2/3 water. You mean the possibility of oil.
As I said before if that was true then Tito and his friends would have tapped into that one, but even if they find oil they have to use some very expensive processes which in the current times they would need to get $80 to $90 per barrel to cover costs and profit. Then there is the possibility of contamination through spillage and there goes your tourism for decades.
If foreign investment did not take place during Josipovic’s time and he was viewed as a moderate who was attempting at reconciliation between Serbs and Croats, Kolinda has no chance. All she will do is entrench that Croatia is viewed as a fascist state.

LOL @ Bambam, your new President will not do any of these things, mostly because the Presidency is not an office that is responsible for any of those things. Besides, it's cute that you think you can act like an independent country, but your fiscal, economic, political and social policies are dictated by the EU. A country as wealthy as the UK sees 75% of its laws made in Brussels, if they aren't independent, neither are you.

This woman has indicated she will toughen up Serbia's path towards the EU. If that's really true, then right you are Bam Bam! Long live the HDZ!!!

What a joke of a candidate! Croatian voters have set the country back decades. Kitarovic will be manipulated by the far right followers of the HDZ and the veterans groups. This should make dopes like bam,bam happy. The reality will be a continued exodus of young educated people. The brain drain is here to stay for the forseeable future in Croat land. The only thing Croats have going for them is that the presidency is more of a cerimonial position. However, it speaks to the mindset of the majority of Croats. If the HDZ achieves a majority in the parliment, look out. You might as well flush Croatia down the toilet. And I say good riddance!

I'm surprised at the results being so close. This is more like the Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. It's too bad that Josipovic did not prevail, he was level-headed if anything. When nationalist senitiment is on the rise it's usually because of major economic problems. That being said, nationalism doesn't create jobs. Only difference for Croatia now is that they will be singing more patriotic songs, but the people still won't have money to buy drinks while singing those songs. Oh well, at least Merkel will have a girlfriend now.

sj my delusional friend more of your jealousy BS over beautiful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCxulFgT938 Croatia. It's not healthy sj soon you will be muttering to your self. I was shocked with a decline of Serbian and Russian tourist. In 2014, foreign tourists generated 11.7 million arrivals, up 5.2% on the year, and 67 million bed/nights, up 2.2%. Domestic tourists generated a 1% increase in arrivals and a 0.6% increase in bed/nights.

In the shoulder seasons, January-June and September-December, arrivals went up 5.6% and bed/nights 4% from 2013.

German tourists accounted for the most bed/nights last year (21%), followed by Slovenes (11%), Austrians (8%), the Czech (7%), Italians and Poles (6% each), Slovaks (3.5%), the Dutch (3.3%), the British and Hungarians (3% each).

Last year also saw an increase in bed/nights from the US (17.2%), the UK and Hungary (9% each), Bosnia and Herzegovina (8.6%), Austria (3%), Slovenia (2%) and Germany (1.5%).

Noticeable declines were recorded among tourists from Russia 14% and Serbia (1.2%.

Having heard her acceptance speech last night - interjected with her singing "Zovi, samo zovi" - and fully expecting to see her touched by the Hand of God to resurrect Tudjman's body from his Franco-esque mausoleum amid cheering supporters from Hercegovina to Sydney, I think it's safe to say that Croatia's newest president is a bigger nutball than Toma and Vucic combined.

I'm looking forward to many many months of ridiculous paeans to Faith, Family, and Fatherland now that HDZ has managed to just barely win a largely ceremonial position. The Mother of All Croats can now nourish her children on patriotism while her country continues to have the worst economy in the European Union.

5 years of Josipovic's Udba / Communists did nothing to advance the country other than spending thousands of tax payers dollars on building Tito figurines and 'trying' to return to a Partizan lifestyle. Thank god these commo twits are no longer in power. Highly educated Kolinda will bring back investment, jobs, veteran and minority equality and most importantly faith in god. Croatia is a country with extreme wealth in its soil / sea and now it can get back to work. Serbs needs to respect where they live and only then will they will be treated with respect instead of tarnishing their names by continually dreaming of a GS, just like those 3 Serb idiots who dressed in battle fatigue with a Serbian flag at the entrance to Vukovar a few days ago. You wonder why you are hated...! Long live the HDZ.

Agree with comment below. I always am surprised when Serbs are shocked that they are hated. I mean why are you surprised? It is bluntly obvious. Also, God, if he is real is most definitely not your friend.

Whether Croats are satisfied or dissatisfied they have to be prepared for more of the same. If the far right dumbbells think that electing Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic will change anything, boy are they in for a surprise.
Croatia is a country that is financially unsustainable nor has it ever been, and this has been proven due cut backs in EU assistance. As Brussels continues to reduce its budget Croatia is forced to close Government-subsidised industry, but nothing is replacing it as foreign investment is non-existent.
Croatia’s main source of income is tourism and the 2014 season was a complete washout. That means more borrowings on top of what Zagreb already owes and all indicators are pointing to a world slowdown.
People are disatisfied becasue life is getting more difficult as unemployment rises and the current government has no answer to this problem so the oppostion comes out with anti Serb slogans and stupid promises. However, once elected they cannot change the current course of action.
In two or three months Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic will look very plain in deed.
