Thing is, the Hague is not an impartial court of law. It is a political court, meant to demonize Serbia and present a false narrative of how the Yugoslav civil wars actually went down. So whether he was "convicted" or "acquitted" is irrelevant. The reality is even this highly Serbophobic court could not convict him even by their overt double standards, and he was there for over a decade!

His major grievance wasn't no depression, it was the right to defend HIMSELF instead of being defended by a lawyer. They granted him that, and he tore them apart, legally. The only thing he is guilty of is being a Serbian nationalist even though nationalism is rampant in the Balkans even today, least in Serbia.

Wrongo bucko

Ari says:
"Had he not went there and successfully defended himself, he would not be nearly as popular as he is today (however much that is)."
I have never understood how his diehard fanatics think he successfully defended himself. Was he acquitted and the world did not know? He did I have to admit, use the court against itself. He manipulated the court and successfully strung his trial out 10 times longer than it should have taken. Through multiple, multiple illnesses, depression, hunger strikes, an enormous magnitude of filings and charges that had to be answered before his trial could continue.
But those were theatrics not defense. He knew he could never establish his innocence so instead he delayed the process so that he would probably die before being convicted.

Seselj is popular not so much because of his ideas, but ...
---…--

In what universe is Seselj popular?

He has a vocal following, for sure. I guess he's popular among segments of the diaspora, but it would be a stretch to say that he's popular in Serbia, especially considering his party got, what, 2% of the vote?
(Danilo, 13 November 2014 19:44)

You have mistakenly comprehended what I've said. My statement was to explain why he is popular among the people that do support him. His popularity only went up based on his performance in the Hague. Had he not went there and successfully defended himself, he would not be nearly as popular as he is today (however much that is).

Seselj himself is more popular than his party and him not being around to lead it has hurt them. He probably has enough support to get back into parliament if elections were called today. I wouldn't ever vote for his party, but I respect him and admire his performance in a highly anti-Serbian kangaroo court. I would have been there to great him had I been there for the respect I have for his successful defence in the Hague.

Line me up with everybody who is confused about this.

Why is this guy so unconcerned about whether Seselj is guilty of anything or not? He sounds like the entire criminal case against Seselj was nothing more than a way to keep him out of politics. Maybe he knows something we don't

With the announcement that Serbia now has over 100 parties, it shows there is great disillusionment with the controlling parties in Serbia. I would say that while Seselj is not really going to be a huge magnet for people in a country that is tired of the nationalistic rhetoric, but he could pose significant problems to the powerbase of the SNS.

victor or victim

pre 9 godina

Per Vulin, the US is the all powerful controller of the world, maybe he needs to talk with sj, who thinks the power of the US is gone.
Or is this one of those flip cards that Serbs use, you know like Serbia is the victim on one side and the victor on the other so they can flip it whichever speech they are giving. Sometimes they will use both sides in the same speech.
I see the Hague is no longer a NATO court it is a US court.
Apparently Vulin has great fears of the return of Seselj.

Seselj is popular not so much because of his ideas, but because he successfully defended himself in a highly anti-Serbian kangaroo court for more than a decade. He was very insulting to the quasi prosecution, I'd call them persecutors and he dared them to convict him of any crime which they couldn't.

Now he's home, and the 2 guys who used to fetch him his newspaper who betrayed him while in prison are running the country. Just days after the Shqiptar Arnaut leaves Serbia, Seselj comes home. Governing politicians are crying conspiracy theory... it's never boring in the Balkans.

If you have a closer look at serb political leadership, you'll find out that these people (Šešelj, Vučić, Vulin...) are rather losers. For these people to be sucsessful in politics, loud radical Nationalism is the only option. Then they move bit by bit to real politics. Moderate positions have no chance to win elections in Serbia as you can see.
For Vučić, Vulin et al. the release of Šešelj is indeed very unpleasant. They are doing "their best" by crude insults towards Albanians, but that is very common in Serbia, it doesn't bring you extra popularity. Šešelj is much better in doing this. Furthermore he is not perceived to be a whiner.
Šešeljs release could indeed destabilize the current government.

Naive of some Serb politicians thinking in this matte, for the past 3 years every radical commentator on every Serbian news site has been calling their current government officials traitors.
