Albanian's that want a "Greater Albania" are the minority. Coming from an Albanian, these are individuals that live in the past. Unfortunately, these are people that make news not those that go about their day just like anyone else in Serbia. For President Nikolic to say "sport games are no place for making provocative political messages" and "Serbia has done everything to leave the past behind and to develop friendly relations" I would ask what he thinks of the "Kill Albanians" chant that echoed throughout the stadium. I'm sure these are minorities that do not represent the Serbian nation.
I'm disappointed that the game ended the way it did. I was hoping for a good game - whether win, draw, or loss.

(Rocky, 16 October 2014 16:23)
What exactly is your destiny, Greater Albania? So when does that start, actually? I mean I get it, it started with the NATO bombardment of Serbia and the theft and cleansing of Kosovo-Metohija, but what about the rest of the of the map? When are you going to attack Greece, Macedonia and Montenegro for the parts you intend to take from them? What about South-Central Serbia?
I ask because you truly owe it to yourselves to give it all you got to make this a reality. You are defiant. You clearly believe your insanity, and you are violent enough to make a go of it. So I say go for it. The obvious difference between now and the 1990s was that conditions are absolutely not there today for NATO countries to act as your airforce as you invade 4 sovereign nations that border you. So if you can pull it off, by God you deserve each and every single milimeter you can steal.
Good luck, and may God give strength to every primitive Albanian male who thinks there is a shot in hell for this to materialize. I hope your confidence pushes you towards acting.

I am amazed by the comments that seem to ask the question "why does a flag of Albania cause so much tension" Take a look at the flag, understand the deeply provocative nature of the flag, couple that with the fact it was flown over an almost exclusively Serb crowd in a very tense atmosphere and then add to that the fact that not one Albanian official has condemned the flying of the flag. In fact, it is reported that the Albanian authorities have claimed that the drone was the only real opportunity available to them to fly the Albanian flag in such a hostile atmosphere. Greater Albania does not exist as a country and as such the flag that was flown is not a real flag. I am further disappointed by the BBC reporting of this incident. Either they didn't do their homework properly or they really do not understand the degree of provocation this flag represented. I am English and have lived in Belgrade for sometime now and to be honest, even I was shocked by the provocative nature of this event. As has been said before, imagine it was a "Greater Serbia" flag flying over an Albanian football stadium..I wonder how the world's press would report that? Time for a little more balanced and unbiased reporting from the supposed bastions of fair reporting I think. Just my opinion.

Problem is this wasn't an albanian flag like an australian flag or a german flag or any other nations flag it was a flag with a map including albania macedonia parts of greece kosovo and montenegro, and said greater albania. I don't know which country this is, probably because it doesn't exist but the players protecting this flag better be in a lot of trouble because it would set a dangerous precedent allowing such provocative flags to be flown and have players defending it. It could be a catalyst for very big problems. Im sure Macedonians wouldn't appreciate being told they will be in greater albania via a flag at a football match, the same flag that if fifa defends will ruin any credibility they have left. This alone should tell us enough about the personality and attitude of albanians, they cannot live in harmony with others they want to ethnically cleanse macedonia kosovo parts of greece and montenegro and have it as greater albania. Ask yourself when do they plan on doing this?

The only thing missing was a bomb. I thought that Nikolic could never embarrass himself and Serbia more than when he went on the mock hunger strike and ended up in the hospital after missing a couple of meals, but I was wrong.
This whole thing is so Overplayed it is an embarrassment fot the entire region showing that the Balkans are not ready for living in the real world. Maybe the whole region should be carved out and placed in the middle of the ocean isolated from the rest of the world.
pre 9 godina
Why where both teams and officials just sat find around at the time when the natural albania flag was shown in the stadium?
Maybe it was because the Serbs were showing their love and tolerance by singing to kill the Albanians and even singing kill the croats( who were not even at the game hahhahaha) and shooting flares at the Albanian players on the pitch.
The whole world saw 30,000 Serbs acting like terrorists and threatening neighbors from the state of albania, kosov, bosnia, and Croatia. They saw serbs shooting flares and fireworks and throwing chairs and bottles and anything else that was not bolted down in the stadium. Then they have the nerve to talk about disrupting the region and blah blah blah.
The whole world is saying " the Albanians got the Serbs this time" and the whole world is laughing at the Serbs huffing and puffing. Lol

Rule number one: When Serbs smash, destroy, kill, humiliate, rape etc. then only because they got "provoked".
Rule number two: When there is no provocation, create or invent one.

Rule number four: Serbs are angels.
Rule number five: Rule one to four are always valid.

Rule number six: Use PR to project your own bestiality onto your opponent, and use the whole event to orchestrate yet another pogrom of those few Serbian wretches that had no other option but stay in "free" Kosovo (see under history of 2004).
Rule number seven: Promote the outrageous Greater Albania idea more and more openly; cause chaos, then run away like a girl, be as loud as you can be, and wait for your sponsors to protect you.
Rule number eight: Ensure there are numerically more Albanians on this discussion board, even though it is media house from Serbia - the more insulting, vulgar and aggressive you are - the better the result gets. There is always strength in numbers.
Rule number nine: Use more western sounding first names to appear more relevant.
Rule number ten: Never give up the picture of civilized, peace-loving, oppressed, poor saintly people. Forget that you fared so much better under "horrible" Serbs over decades than you did under your very own Enver Hoxha.
For more rules, ask your sponsors.

What if the fireworks and bottles thrown against Albanian players were a bomb, then? Or did the Serbian police allow fireworks willingly? What if those fans had knives? This is completely unprofessional behavior by Serbian politicians. They are siding with the extremist part of the Serbian population, rather than representing the normal people of Serbia.

I believe that the manner in which the match was handled in was very poor. Also, there is solid proof (video) showing that one of the Albanian players was attacked with a chair by one of the fans which just tells me that the police where not doing their jobs, this is solely the responsibility of the country housing the event. Also how come nobody is saying anything about how the Albanian fans were targeted and physically attacked by not only Serbian fans but by police too after the match. In retrospect, Albanian supporters should have not been allowed to come in to Serbia and vice versa For serbs coming to Albania

"only a bomb was missing" really how can you say that, if they were going to put a bomb then there was going to be a bomb, its very simple, this was a game no one had intetions of killing anyone beside the serbian fans...sorry but thats what we saw on TV during the game.

Pure hypocrisy from Serbian Officials
The reaction of Dacic in 2010 during the Italy-Serbia match where Albanian flag was burned by Serbian thugs of Red Star.
Dačić said that the intervention of Italian police could have been more effective and that they ought to have prevented the spectators from bringing into the pitch the devices which they are not allowed to carry with them, and underlined that Belgrade would never allow something like that to happen.
Dacic reaction in 2014.... he forget to mention the total failure of Serbian police this time..ironic huh?
The accident during the match between Serbia and Albania is a meaningful and planned in advance political provocation,

As a Serb I congratulate the Albanians for hatching a plan like this. For years I've always hated these "Delije" and "Grobari". They push their weight around Beograd and claim they are 'Serbs". Yet when Albanians start trouble in their own backyard, they hardly lift a finger. As Albanians in merdare and presevo are celebrating, smashing Serb signs and bashing elderly Serb priets in Orahovac, these hooligans from Belgrade are still doing NOTHING!!!! It is beyond belief how pathetic these people are. I feel sorry for all the men and women who died on the battlefields of Kosovo, they would be rolling in their graves knowing Serbs are letting this all happen because they want to be "civilised" and "peace loving people" What a joke!

@ Aston as to the first part of your comment, that map u refer to becoming reality? That map is reality, it has been reality, it will continue to be reality! That map accurately describes the regions overwhelming Albanian majority population pre-ottoman occupation, post-ottoman occupation! The picture of Ismail qemali on the right side of that map depicting the ethnic Albanian distribution in the region In 1912 is there to remind u, that in 1912 his Declaration of Independence was made to include that entire map! That second person to the left on the banner is no one else but the legend himself, the great lion warrior,& freedom fighter ISA BOLITiNI from BOLITiN in today's Mitrovica, a man who himself battled along side of his 7000 Albanian warriors against the ottomans & their occupation of Albanian lands,, a man that was then betrayed by a so called snake-like Balkan alliance one of which Serbia was a part of, that used the guise of revolting against the ottomans just to exploit and conquer Albanian inhabited lands!
The other answer to your other part of the comment.
Once the Albanian players were subjected to the barbaric nature of your heavenly Serb people's attitude toward them & their nation, in a stadium at a sporting match, the only thing left was to show those animal-like-spectators right in the center of Serbia itself, that we Albanians fear absolutely no one! We Albanians haven't feared the mightiest of empires, let alone little tiny radical-Serbia!

Serbia was not able to keep a match going on without incidents. The fans, the police, and even the private security forces were violent against the Albanian players. This should not be tolerated! Serbia can't join the EU with these things!
pre 9 godina
It was a nasty prank to be sure. However, considering a Serbian orthodox delegation managed to do so the same when invited to inaugurate an Orthodox Cathedral in Tirana the outcome was markedly more civilized.
pre 9 godina
Mr President, the fact alone that there was not a bomb on that drone but a banner, should tell you volumes. You've been trying for years and decades to portray Albanians as terrorists, yet even when they have a chance, they send you banners, not bombs.
In addition, do you remember what Ivica Dacic, said regarding the violence of the Serbian fans in Genoa? The responsibility rests solely with the hosts. It should have been the Serbian police that should have prevented that drone from flying over the stadium, and arrested the culprit. No one else bears any responsibility, but the person that flew the drone and the Serbian police. Everything else is just noise and propaganda and your ugly violent nature.
pre 9 godina
UEFA and FIFA have already condemned Serbia for all this that happened in their own backyard. To me it's nothing new, we all know this wasn't the first time and surely it's not going to be the last time either. Remember 2010 Italy, Danny Rose England U21, Partizan BG vs Hotspurs and now against Albania. I guess the fines of hundreds of thousands of euros that Serbia has paid didn't work. Guess what it's very likely that Football Federation of Serbia beside a huge fine will be banned to have it's games in Serbia or even worse banned not to compete in any UEFA or FIFA games at all for few years. Serbia should not be allowed to play against Albania, Croatia and Bosnia.
pre 9 godina
well.. I am surprised.. actually I am shocked that no one of the people who are commenting here refuses to be realistic and see things as they are.
I agree, flying the flag was provoking, but what do you expect when the whole stadium was booing when the Albanian anthem was playing? What do you expect when fans were chanting "death to Albanians"? What do you expect when the Albanian flag that was supposed to be next to the Serbian and UEFA one was folded? What do you expect when you ban all the Albanian symbols from the stadium and don't allow fans to follow their team?
I don't think the flag was the reason of the fight. It was just the excuse.
By the way, Serbs have a history of violence in the stadiums. remember genoa, remember what happened few weeks ago in the same stadium in Beograd? That's not the case with the Albanian fans.
You don't expect people to take all the sh** that you through at them and complain about them throwing some back at you.
pre 9 godina
@ben tobelgrade
Please save us this I-am-more-civilized-than-thou superiority complex. In order for the map on that "flag" to become reality, many Serbs, Greeks, Macedonians, Montenegrins and yes, Albanians too, would have to die violent death. Few questions:
-Would there have been any major incidents had this vulgar and outrageous "flag" provocation never taken place?
-Was the person who took it down not right in taking it down? As threatening and disgusting the message that this "flag" was to him personally, did he even try to destroy it or just remove it from the pitch?
-What were the Albanian players who approached him, threatening him physically, tried to achieve? Get it back because they agree with the message, maybe? Or did they just want to be considered heroes in their country? How could removing the flag even remotely be interpreted as a provocation to Albanian players?
-Based upon the played part of the match, who would be considered a better team that woul win eventually?
-If even the option to continue the game after fully emptying the stadium was on the offer, why did not Albanians agree with that and finish the game? They do not feel threatened when they attacked the man for removing the "flag", but they do few minutes later? Were the Serbian players not pelted along with Albanian as they entered the tunnel?
pre 9 godina
There is no doubt that these actions where a deliberate and desperate act by the albanians designed to instigated violence. I curious, is it possible for albanians to evolve and behave like civilised humans as opposed to their usual provocative and savage behaviour? I have doubt it!
pre 9 godina
Seriously? "A bomb to cause destabilization in Serbia and the Balkans?" While I regret the violence and I hold both sides equally responsible, did the Serbs forget that when it comes to soccer hooliganism, they are themselves peerless in interrupting matches and causing "destabilization?" Name one Albanian soccer event that has ended in a manner similar to the Euro 2012, qualifiers in Italy on 12 October 2010! Name one event when derbies like those between Partizan and Hajduk Kula or FK Vojvodina ended up in death of fans and destruction of property? What is I say this morality of the "pride about the nation" kind of speech that somehow does more damage than it seeks to solve problems. Prez. Nikolic's words are just empty rhetoric which will likely fuel fans and anti-Albanian attitudes among Serbs to more extremes - if indeed it is possible at all, judging by what kind of "amity" there is among these peoples anyway. The Serbian press, for the sake of this "amity" and prospects of peace, should try to play it down, not throw unsubstantiated conclusions and fan the flames of racism. Lets wait for UEFAs investigation first, there will be plenty of time for accusations.
pre 9 godina
Hatred was shown by Serbia's refusal to allow Albanian fans in the Stadium.
(Dardani, 15 October 2014 17:26)
The agreement not to allow fans from the opposing teams were agreed by both Serbia and Albania.
Considering the Albanian media is furious over their team being attacked (after conveniently missing they attacked the Serb player for bringing the flag down), what would have happened if Albanian fans were permitted to attend? A bloodbath the likes of which your media would be calling for war.
Tell you what: you invite Serb fans for the rematch in Tirana next month and if everything goes off without a hitch, even after Serb fans taunt and insult Albanian players and fans with a Greater Serbia map, you have full right to claim the higher moral ground.
Chances are that won't happen since we're already getting reports of sporadic attacks by Albanians against Serbs and others over what happened last night. Remember if you want to make it look like you're the better person, stop being the ones attacking the people you want to pass off as barbaric :)
pre 9 godina
No Nikolic, Serbian citizens participate in terrorist activities thru-out the world! One case that comes to mind Ukraine! Even before the plastic made drown was flown, Serbian fans were mocking the Albanian team, ultranationalist Serbs were throwing incendiary devises and other objects at the Albanian team, your entire Serb audience of radical Chetniks were yelling absurd verses calling for the destruction of Albania and her entire nation which has lived in this part of Europe for 3000 years! UBI e SHIPTAR, ( Death to Albanians ) was the chanting of your Serbian audience! This is how Serbia hosts other nations, and we Albanians will show to the entire world the real Serbia which so desperately try's to disguise itself as being a democratic & reformed country? Your not reformed or democratic, your the very same barbaric monster of yesteryear , and yesterday we Albanians showed Serbia that we will never fear radical Serbia, not even in the very so called capital of Serbia, Belgrade! We will confront you Serbia at every corner of the earth, in every city, in every country if we have to! There is app 7 million of us on your doorstep, with another 7-9 million around the world! And believe me when I tell you, It's only a walking distance to Serbia! This is only the beginning of this story, Serbia will have to make full disclosures of her democratic reforms & policy's, it is required in full and will be made available to the democratic public, we Albanians will make sure of this!

I have yet to see a Serb media source discuss the "Kill Siptari", "Don't let them out alive", "Send them back in body bags" messages, before the game even started. How about booing during the Albanian national anthem?
You have a long way to go before the world takes you seriously.
(Fluid, 15 October 2014 17:22)
Typical Albanian tactics. Point the finger somewhere else even in circumstances where they are clearly in the wrong. That and just make up things that never happened like these "signs" which I am sure the Western media would have been all over had they actually existed. Yes your anthem was booed, just as Serbia's anthem would have been booed if it was played in Tirana. But for some reason I find it hard to believe that between the anthems and the 40 minute mark in the 1st half, the Albanians prepared this completely unplanned attack in Belgrade and got it flying all at a moments notice.
Funny how you say "the world" as if the world takes you seriously. You are confusing the fact that the NATO alliance bombed Serbia for exploitation of Kosovo-Metohija's rich natural resources which you will be all too happy to give as some kind of sign that "the world" gives a damn about you primitive animals either.

"Sport games are no place for making provocative political messages. This is about promoting unscrupulous and unfeasible ideas about 'a Greater Albania', which could have been expected to encounter a strong reaction at the stadium and across the country. Serbia has done everything to leave the past behind and to develop friendly relations," underlined Nikolić.
Booing the Albanian anthem. Singing and chanting Kill Albanians and Slaughter Albanians. Pelting our players and throwing flares at them was not a provocation? Serbs you are a nation of warmongers. Nato should have turned Belgrade into Baghdad.
pre 9 godina
It's obvious that whomever flew that banner knew the reaction that it would cause. Serbs are not the type of people to ignore a blatant insult and those who flew it knew exactly what would come of it. It's like poking a hornets nest with a stick, is it their fault for reacting and stinging you or is it your fault for poking the nest in the first place. Of course this incident makes the Serbs look bad, but you cannot poke someone in the eye and expect them to take it lying down. Although I do not commend their actions, I feel that this was the only reaction that could have resulted from flying that banner in Belgrade and if the Albanian players had left it alone when Mitrovic grabbed it that could have been the end of it. Oh well....
pre 9 godina
It is clear from this article that no lessons have been lerned from 7 years worth of war. If a country and people are stable they would not be destabilised by the aperance of one flag. Imagine if the Albanians wanted to sing their anthem in peace, would that get your blood boiling. Welcome to the 21 centry serbian brothers and sisters people are allowed to use their national symbols. Just as a reminder that when the on the opening of the Albanian orthodox cathedral the official serb delegation showed a flag with words kosovo is serbija. The civilised people of Tirana did nothing. Grow up is only a flag especially when the chanting before thatt was burn Albanians burn. I assume that is ok?

When will you publish the version of Albania's Foreign Minister which has spoken since the morning?
Why Serbia fails to create a civil society for decades? One that doesn't buy the propaganda of the politicians...
Can your media check basic facts:
- Was anybody arrested?
- What was found?
- Who is the author of the drone?
Can you really compare an act of provocation with an act of violence?!

No RT,
Serbian Government, ashamed of its' hooligans actions, is once again applying the spaghetti approach - throw everything at them, and something will stick. It is a tough case.
The Albanian government is acting maturely, keeping its' distance from the sports events. The Albanian ambassador has been asked to remain calm.
If reaction is needed, it will do after it lets the hotheads cool.
After all, they are afraid that if they say something, their embassy will be torched (again).

Let's not make this into anything more than it was - a brazen and creatively ingenious way of pissing off thousands of people at once. It's bad enough security was lax to the point no one saw a freaking drone fly into the stadium. Let's not compound this with thoughts of a bomb, which I doubt those who did this could pull off, but I doubt even more the local security would have found, given the shock they had with the drone.

@Fluid The only reason people don't take Serbia seriously is because a lack of historical knowledge. Serbia got all the blame because it was a friend of Russia not because they were on the wrong side of history. When the Soviet union collapsed Russia extended its hand towards the west, the west responded by using Russia's weakness to destroy Russia's sphere of influence. This created the Putin system and tensions today. I believe that if Russia and Serbia were not so close at that time the west would have likely chosen the Serbian side in the conflict. Serbia is the last victim of the old cold war and the first victim of the new one. But we will keep on debating and show people one at a time that the history of the balkan wars isn't as black and white as we are told here. Kosovo is Serbia!!

President Tomislav Nikolić said the incident - when a Greater Albania flag was flown above the pitch, attached to a small drone - meant that "an assassination was carried out against the establishing of friendship between Serbia and Albania."
You are not worth being an undertaker let alone to be a President of a country. If one banner was a threat to your country, you should run to your beloved Russia and hide there.

Is this guy for real???? 30 Albanians in a stadium with 32 000 Serbs had planned to do all that??? Destabilize Serbia and the region with a plastic drone and a banner??? They couldn't manage that even if they were armed with bloody tanks!!! But, I guess the Serbs are never guilty of anything, not the atrocities of the war, not the genocide. And not even being able of keeping order in a stadium. Serbs are practically angels, its just the damn world that hates them! Poor devils! Jesus Christs, the things we have to hear!

So, it was OK that the whole team of Albania had to run for its life, after being attacked not only by hooligans, but by the security forces as well...
I have yet to see a Serb media source discuss the "Kill Siptari", "Don't let them out alive", "Send them back in body bags" messages, before the game even started. How about booing during the Albanian national anthem?

I wounder when will you publish the version of Albania's Prime Minister which has spoken to Voice of America?
When will you publish the version of Albania's Foreign Minister which has spoken since the morning?
Why Serbia fails to create a civil society for decades? One that doesn't buy the propaganda of the politicians...
Can your media check basic facts:
- Was anybody arrested?
- What was found?
- Who is the author of the drone?
Can you really compare an act of provocation with an act of violence?!
The only true leaders in Serbia during the past 24 hours have been Serbian players. Not their fans, the media or the political leaders (which are far from serbian players honestly).
pre 9 godina
Oh well....

@ben tobelgrade
Serbia was not able to keep a match going on without incidents. The fans, the police, and even the private security forces were violent against the Albanian players. This should not be tolerated! Serbia can't join the EU with these things!
pre 9 godina
Everything else is just noise and propaganda and your ugly violent nature.
pre 9 godina

It was a nasty prank to be sure. However, considering a Serbian orthodox delegation managed to do so the same when invited to inaugurate an Orthodox Cathedral in Tirana the outcome was markedly more civilized.

I believe that the manner in which the match was handled in was very poor. Also, there is solid proof (video) showing that one of the Albanian players was attacked with a chair by one of the fans which just tells me that the police where not doing their jobs, this is solely the responsibility of the country housing the event. Also how come nobody is saying anything about how the Albanian fans were targeted and physically attacked by not only Serbian fans but by police too after the match. In retrospect, Albanian supporters should have not been allowed to come in to Serbia and vice versa For serbs coming to Albania

"Top Serbian officials believe that the Serbia-Albania football match incident was a deliberate, planned provocation aiming to destabilize Serbia and the region."

Oh well....

Kosovo is Serbia!!
pre 9 godina

No RT,
Serbian Government, ashamed of its' hooligans actions, is once again applying the spaghetti approach - throw everything at them, and something will stick. It is a tough case.
The Albanian government is acting maturely, keeping its' distance from the sports events. The Albanian ambassador has been asked to remain calm.

After all, they are afraid that if they say something, their embassy will be torched (again).

@ben tobelgrade
"Top Serbian officials believe that the Serbia-Albania football match incident was a deliberate, planned provocation aiming to destabilize Serbia and the region."
If some 30 thousand people in the stadium including the President of Serbia fell for a trick pulled by some thirty people, one can only ask why so many of them fell for it. What draw them to it? Is it their intelligence or stupidity?
pre 9 godina
Everything else is just noise and propaganda and your ugly violent nature.

my Q is how in the freeking world NO ONE is condeming words coming out from the serbian huligans(kill albanians) or having a litle respect about albanian anthem goash this was almost the same scenario in may 13 1990 when dinamo and partizan played and after that thousands of people end up dead in the wars same s..t was told against croation nation ...anyone??? saying or apologize about that ? BECAUSE THAT IS A REAL THREAT...NOT A RC DRONE FLYING A FLAG ON THE AIR ...SHAME..SHAME..SRAMOTA
pre 9 godina

What if the fireworks and bottles thrown against Albanian players were a bomb, then? Or did the Serbian police allow fireworks willingly? What if those fans had knives? Let's not make this into anything more than it was - a brazen and creatively ingenious way of pissing off thousands of people at once. It's bad enough security was lax to the point no one saw a freaking drone fly into the stadium.

I believe that the manner in which the match was handled in was very poor. Also, there is solid proof (video) showing that one of the Albanian players was attacked with a chair by one of the fans which just tells me that the police where not doing their jobs, this is solely the responsibility of the country housing the event.

You are confusing the fact that the NATO alliance bombed Serbia for exploitation of Kosovo-Metohija's rich natural resources
