Yes but see the only times these nations can make these advancements against Serbia is when empires do it for them. So, to make it simple for you to understand, if X has two options:

A. fight alone and loose;
B. involve Y in the fight and win.

X is smart, but not heroic, by choosing (B); X is dumb, but heroic, by choosing (A). (A) fits the Serbs the way you described them; (B) fits the Albanians the way you described them. I'm not saying either option is wrong. It's OK for some people to value more spiritual wins and others to value more pragmatical ones :) The former will get a medal and very nice folk tales to tell; the latter will get the practical things they wanted.
