There is no historical proof that a Croatian empire existed in the middle ages, there is evidence that 'Croatians" existed in the middle ages, but these were Serbs who converted into Catholicism - (These are actually facts from the University of Zagreb, not made up, which I find ironic and hilarious!). The first nation or state that beared the name "Croatia" was in fact the Banova of Croatia, set up by the Serbian royal family in order to please the Serbs in 1939.

So let me recap, the Catholic Serbs hate the Orthodox Serbs, even though the Orthodox Serbs were the first people to let the Catholic Serbs have their own state?

Btw isn't it funny that in the city of Mostar, all the "catholic" churches are facing West and not East? Why would a Catholic church face Constantinople and not Rome? :O!

Mind boggling!

Need I remind you that the Krajina frontier was set up by the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Ferdinand as a shield against the Ottoman invasions and completely separate from the Croatian Sabor or Hungarian parliament , it was a fully autonomous state under the rule of the Austrian emperor. Croatia never ruled those lands as well as Istria and Dalmatia which were under the Venetian empire.

Vukovar was originally more Serbian than Croatian. The fact that Croatia got all of Slavonia when it was on the enemy side in WWI and WWII was a huge tragedy and doomed much of the Serbian population living there.

Ari Gold - Stick to dealing with your problems in Gaza and the West Bank, you can't be factual so I won't waste my time with a person that injects himself into something he knows nothing about...PS...1 million? never mind, you still believe you didn't murder Jesus, how could I expect you to know facts about any part of history? BTW Ari, you are nothing more than a big nosed, beedy eyed Jew! two can play at your game...ohhh...and please don't attempt to label me as an anti semite....I'm just responding to your insults Jewboy!

Piscinin - the hatred between Serbs and Croats is stupid, but in order for things to change it means people have to look at themselves first before they point the finger at someone. Both Serbs and Croats are guilty of it, Croatia has left a dark mark on history, no doubt about it but so has Serbia...they have to look at what they want for their future and then find a way to get there, set aside egos and agree to work towards a peaceful and prosperous future....but as you can see, even we here tend to express our hatred, imagine what people in Vukovar feel like?

The hatred between serbs and croats is one of the most stupid things i`ve ever witnessed. Two people speaking practically the same language...

And in these relatively benign times, when borders are dissapearing, there are still arguments about the length of penises in the region.

The war is over, it was created (like always) by politicians, you only have one life, there are a million things to enjoy, and you still use WWII and the `90s to hate a neighbour...

Its so much hate in Balkans and we have not fought as much as Germens and French against each other. If a kid 6years old born in Croatia meets a Kid 6years old born in Serbia and they speak to each other do they understand each other YES. Relax let them use what they wish, yes war happened be the first to let things go and those then will repent.

If we speak in balkans more in 2010 to 2014 rather than 1914 or 1814 or even 1314 there would be more economical prosperity, it seems that people born in balkans cary this burden of history more thna they should.

You're nuts. First of all, it's the same damn language with the exception that Serbs use Cyrillic in addition to Latin. Otherwise, it's the same exact thing. And there is more historical proof of a Serbian language existing than a Croatian one.

Other than that, what you call "Croatia" isn't historically nor justifiably Croatian. Hundreds of thousands of Serbs live in these lands for just as long as their Croat neighbors. Only thing that happened was the communist Yugoslav authority, tragically out of Belgrade no less, gave the Socialist People's Republic of Croatia a large minority of Serbs to rule over.

You are nothing more than a typical fascist and neo-Ustasha. No more, no less. The Germans had to accept the internal division of their country for their bloody role in WWII. The Croats which murdered over 1 million Serbs, Jews & Roma in their concentration camps received minorities to govern over again, never mind how sadistic the Ustasha were.

And a substantial amount of Croats are not shy about their fascism. Why should they be? They were never forced to actually reflect on it.

Balkan Anthropologist - "tell me how the "Croatian" language survived 1000 years of Hungarian rule." - Croatia had autonomy as part of that Empire.

to the many of you that don't understand the differences, I find it interesting how you do not see one very important fact in this discussion. Croatia has always had its own borders throughout history, while you tend to wish we did not. as many nations have been part of an Empire throughout history, so have we. Croatia existed within the Austro Hungarian Empire as its own autonomous country, not as a country governed and ruled by another...we maintained our borders, upheld our culture and continued with our own history.

you are talking about Serbs living throughout their history, IN CROATIA! do you not see the difference? whether you think that any amount of time adds up to the land rightfully being yours, you are wrong...but this is your problem, you just don't see that!

its telling that you think you rightfully deserve to live as Serbs, schooled as Serbs and trying to enforce Serb education in Croatia. as I had mentioned, Mexicans in Texas are first Americans, they learn from American text books, from American teachers through an American curriculum...in Vukovar, they do it opposite!

lets be realistic here, Serbs were at fault for what happened in Vukovar and now in Vukovar, they want to preserve Serbia...its not gonna happen with the support of the people, you murdered thousands, they dont forget!

(Croatian Canadian, 24 September 2014 15:24)

First of all, I sincerely doubt Croatia's *your* homeland. Maybe you were born there but I'm sure you've been living in Canada for a long long time.

Second by what passes as what you think is logic in terms of speaking the language of where you live, Serbs used Cyrillic for centuries living in what has only recently been Croatia. So using Cyrillic now isn't something radical. It's simply restoring something that had been dissuaded for the last few decades.

And if we're going to go on speaking the language of the land, tell me how the "Croatian" language survived 1000 years of Hungarian rule. According to you, you'd all be Magyars by now. Or Italians if you were from Dalmatia.

If you don't like it then tell the EU to go and leave Croatia alone and stop meddling in Croata's affairs. You see, Croatia is now in the EU and what EU says goes.
Still, Serbs have lived on that land for as long as Croatians have so they have every right to have things their way. You can't compare other countries because the situation is different there.
Speaking of Mexicans in America, you will note that Spanish is widely used there and if you want to understand the population of some areas you have to learn Spanish.
Bottom line, go and whinge to the EU if you're not happy.

I agree with you on this one. Ban on Cirillyc and use of "Serbian" words in Croatia in 1990 was in one way right.
Today we have more Croats and Bunjevci in Serbia then there are Serbs in Croatia.
They are even planning to open "Hrvatsko narodno kazaliste" in Subotica with blessing and financial support of our government. I don't see a reason that Croats should have so many rights in Serbia, when those rights were denied to Serbs in Croatia for decades.

Croats got that right - I would ban Latin script in Serbia. Croats, Albanians, Muslims and others should learn Cyrillic. Period. And use Serbian words. If you want "kazaliste" move to Croatia. Here you can have only "Pozoriste".

Even though Texas has been removed from Mexico many generations ago, it is still very Spanish. There are street signs in Spanish and English.
The difference being that Texas wish to include the native Mexican population and not make them feel as second class citizens. Numerous anglophone speak and read Spanish in Texas.
When one considered these two languages, they're very different. They come from a different root language. Where as Croatian and Serbian are so similar that a novice would call them identical. It becomes a matter of respect, from both parties to understand and allow for phonic-comfort with regards to alphabets.

I've read a lot about this topic and have at some point been sympathetic to the Serbs that want cirilica and then I read an article that really opened my eyes.

Serbian and Croatian kids that go to school in Vukovar attend the same schools except, they don't take the same classes....Serbs go to their classes and Croats go to theirs. I find this a clear indication that there is a major divide and it says to me that Serbs want to speak, read and write Serbian, well, there is a solution. Got to Serbia or accept Croatian....Chinese, Greeks, Italians, Latino's....don't expect to be taught their own alphabet and language in American schools, why should Serbs? Mexicans have lived in Texas longer than Americans have and yet they have to learn English...its really quite simple and I find that people who argue on behalf of the Serbs in this matter are delusional!

You want to have Serbia in Croatia? Where else do you find this? You think Russia allows this with Ukranians? You think Koreans allow this with Japanese or vice versa, I'm clear on this topic now...its irrelevant what you want in my homeland...if you don't like it, pack up and leave!

============================

As a Canadian I'm surprised you're not aware that there are publicly funded faith based and language based schools (not just French - which is an official language of Canada).

You do not represent the mind-set of a Canadian. We are inclusive. You defend a continued a practice exclusion.

You don't have to look to far: How about Canada? Minority French rights among the Anglophone majority are entrenched in Canadian Law. Furthermore, Anglophone minority rights in qualifying municipal jurisdictions are also protected in Francophone dominated Quebec.

Canadian. You don't seem to understand that Serbs use both scripts.

Croats want to be something they are not. They will never be Latins, so why the hang up about a Slavic alphabet?

Croats and Serbs speak the same language, with a few trivial variations. Racially the difference is minor - fellow Slavs with lives spoilt by arrogance, stupidity and bigotry.

Pathetic and shameful.

To Croatian Canadian ,
I'm half Croatian half Serbian and I don't see your point, these are the Balkans , people that up until the west decided, lived as neighbours, why do you think people died over there. The people are practically one anyway. But this complex from people not happy with their own lives that they sow hatred to others beggars belief, thanks buddy, we need more of that. Comparing ex-yu to your or another country, won't wash.

Peggy - different day same drivel from you! I've yet to see you be polite, cordial and factual...all I ever see is your BS loud mouth comments....I wonder if you've ever slept with a man because you sure do act like one!

Vukovar was originally more Serbian than Croatian. The fact that Croatia got all of Slavonia when it was on the enemy side in WWI and WWII was a huge tragedy and doomed much of the Serbian population living there.

Hey Croatian Canadian, guess who's paying for replacements all the time. Yep, those muppets who are destroying them.
So instead of wasting money they could channel that money into something useful like hospitals.

Lol "Canada shining ligh"t where thousands of people in WW1 were imprisond in slave labour camps and their property confiscated. Poles ,Chezkslovaks ,Ukranians ,Croatians etc choping forests making ,roads etc and many died in hard dangerous slavery work also malnourished frozen. Not even mention WW2 and treatment of other nationaleties. Lets not forget the treatment of the native Indians their children ripped from their famelies. Children abused in many ways ,punished severly if caught using their mother tounge. Experiments done if they were inadequickly fed what will happen to the children. I could go on and on.
