I'm not sure it will catch on.I got a taxi in Belgrade a few years ago with my wife and daughter who was 6 months old at the time. The driver was genuinely upset and hurt that we went to put our seatbelts on, as though we were questioning his driving ability.Like true British people, we apologised and took them off.

Slowly and steadily as people start to follow the law and respect it and as the economy grows Serbia will indeed become a developed country.... Do you think that the current developed countries all had 5% of people not using seat belts 10/20 years ago? definitely not. Every country has a starting point somewhere..... Serbia has the potential to impress the world in 5-10 years time, just wait and see, if everyone drops this negative pessimistic attitude you have the world will be a better place. You are talking about a country with much political instability in the past 2 decades.... think about it.

It amazes me how an intelligent Serb friend I know can deliberately undo the seatbelt for normal travel, and then show cowardice by putting it back on when there's the possibility of a policeman coming into view.

It amazes me how a stupid Serb friend I know can deliberately undo the seatbelt for normal travel. At least he shows the beginnings of common sense by putting it back on when there's the possibility of a policeman coming into view.

In developed countries, he remarked, the number of those not using seat belts is around five percent - and this small number of people is responsible for 50 percent of all "traffic problems."

Does Serbia count as a developed country? I'm sure the number of people not usuing seat belts is closer to 25% than to 5%
