After all, former fascist countries, Germany and Italy, were founder members of the EU, and other ex-fascist countries such as Spain and Portugal, and ex-Nazi-allies such as Finland and Romania, have joined the EU too. As has Croatia with its sordid fascist past.

While you are quite right in saying that the above countries were either "ex-fascist" or had governements who supported fascist doctrine at some point in their past - it not possible to say that they are fascist today.

Putting aside the hysterical rants screamed by right wingers that anyone who isn't a Serb or Russian must be a fascist or Nazi, the truth is that most people in all of the countries you mnetion are good decent people, and actually do want a democratic peacful life - the very antithesis of Fascism (or Stateism.)

And i would go so far as to say that an OVERWHELMING majority, given the choice of the 3 dominant politcal ideals of the last century (Communism, Fascism and democracy)would and have indeed chosen and legitimised democracy.

As much as I agree that these were great men and that anti-fascism is virtuous, it's really odd to claim that "Serbia would not be on the path towards the EU now if it had not been for such people as the five men killed at Terazije back in 1941".
