EC report to be "mostly positive, with criticism"

A new report by the European Commission will be mostly positive, but in at least three areas Serbia will not get a passing grade, writes a daily.

Only internal reform of tax codes, bureaucracy and solving red-tape will bring Serbia prosperity. And none of this has anything to do with "EU or Russia".

Like you, Ari, I wish that Serbia could do all that on it's own. Unfortunately, it can't. Too much internal inertia to make changes on it's own. Serbia needs an external blueprint to make the reforms it needs and the EU and the process of EU accession is the best/only map/process that Serbia's gonna get

Never trust the West ! They have calculators instead of hearts. So for the time being they just need Serbia's voice. Later they will be back to their Mentor mood and start to put new terms.

Ari's the one talking sense here. The EU is a vacuous entity with nothing to offer any of it's members. If the British want to leave, and a majority do, why would Serbia see this as a nirvana when the UK doesn't?

Wintston I disagree. Even if you take into account the illegal temporary occupation of Kosovo-Metohija, Serbia is the largest state in the region. Despite the fact that 40% of Serbs live outside the Balkans, Serbs still make up the largest ethnic group in the region

So there is immense pressure on Serbia. Not to join the EU obviously because that will never ever happen, but to be led along the "EU path" for a decade or two while the West buys time on what to do with the Balkans. If Serbs and Serbia are not all aboard the train to nowhere, the region could slip from the fingers of the West which is something policy makers do not want.

Kissing anyone's behind will not bring Serbia prosperity. Joining the EU will not make Serbia wealthier, becoming a Russian province wont either. Only internal reform of tax codes, bureaucracy and solving red-tape will bring Serbia prosperity. And none of this has anything to do with "EU or Russia".

Ari, no one is forcing Serbia to try and obtain EU membership. But Serbia is broke, and sees no way out but EU's money. The Serbian government kisses Russian behinds, but it will b far from enough to salvage the shipwreck that the Serbian economy is. Like many have said, Serbia will have to pee, or get off the pot.

And my criticism of the "EC" is that it's a supernational organization made up of unelected bureaucrats that overnight basically stripped power from nation-states and started to dictate their own sick view of Europe. Serbia would be wise to stay away from these lunatics. If you are receiving acclaim from these guys, you are doing something wrong.
