In Serbia for example, priests and patriarchs call for politicians to be killed and wish for "traitors of Russia" to be burned and skinned alive and many other beautiful images. Serbia's President on the other hand says things like "forgive them for they don't know what they do", probably believing he is Jesus Christ.
Religion is 2000 years old. However, humans have been fighting and killing eachother of for 5000 years. How do you explain that?

Religion is also the remedy. To each of your accusations, I can find individuals who used religion for positive purposes. Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Mother Theresa. Take away religion and we still find ways of killing people.

mikeC, though I don't agree that religion is the source of much of the world's conflicts, I very much think its a catalyst, or simply a scapegoat or excuse to rile up a population in most cases, I must remind you that religion is not mearly 2000 years old. Christianity is 2000 years old. judism is older. hinduism is older. the religions of ancient rome, greece and eqypt are older. the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Pastafarianism is about a decade old.
at the root of the problems are difference. religion, language, habit, etc. the way these differences are presented are how the masses are encouraged to hating those that are not us.
