"Serbia likely to export less, no food shortage"

Serbians should not worry that the disastrous floods that hit last week will create a shortage of food products, an expert has said.

Instead of banning export, the government should pay the same rates for the food as the farmers and distributors receive for exporting. Even if that means using Aid money or borrowing to build food reserves. This is not the time to artificially reduce the market and gouge farmers and force them out of business. Export bans have been shown to reduce production because there is less incentive to plant, and greater risk to invest with a smaller chance of profit. Right now, to minimize the damage to the industry, you want to promote and reward more planting in regions that have not been affected, so that they can cover the regions that cannot farm yet.
