Haha, ya because the EU is not corrupt, right? An unelected commission located in another country which is in charge centrally planning the economies and foreign policies of over 500 million people is not corrupt at all!
(Ari Gold, 5 April 2014 12:52)

That's sounds like China on a smaller scale, but according to the CE of B92 forums sj China is the future :)

Leaders of mainly Russian-speaking regions of eastern Ukraine have challenged the legitimacy of the national (Kiev) parliament and have taken control of their territories. These regions – Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Lugansk and Crimea – have a population of 14.4 million. The situation has now gone from chaos to the verge of military confrontation. Personally I do not believe that situation in Ukraine will escalate to war. The globalcontext of military confrontation in Ukraine is related to strategic interests of Russia, U.S. foreign policy and NATO’s expansion since the end of the Cold War. In my opinion this part of problem is easiest to solve when both sides define and agree each other’s red lines.

A win-win face saving solution could be that Crimea will be annexed to Russia and as compensation Ukraine will get e.g. cheaper gas deal, most oligarchs can keep their loot, the ordinary people can get at best relatively stable conditions for a while and U.S. a puppet government in Kiev. In the rest of Ukraine an good outcome might be then a federation or confederation and anyway more power in regions than today with some guarantees of minority rights. The most important outcome could be that the battle moves from verge of war to political and economic fields.

The EU are the people that keep on telling you via their free press that they are much less corrupt and more transparent (love that word), and people swallow it up like medicine and even parrot the articles written in the media.
Sean Connery made a movie in which towards the end his character was asked which did he like more Russia or US. The reply was Russia is as corrupt as the US but there is a lot less BS and that is what the west is all about.

Is this democracy: You are right to a large extent. I accept that there are criteria for accession and Serbia needs to decide whether meet them or not but they do not include agreeing with all EU foreign policy positions especially before you are a member and not least when you have historic ties with the country in question. The EU couldn't agree a common position with respect to Syria and nothing was done but I don't hear anything about that now in the press.

The European Union has the right to ask for support for attitudes, especially if a country wants to apply for its membership. If a country is willing to join, there's no room for complicated negotiations or tasteless politics. Simple as that.

It seems to me that serbian government has no interest in becoming a member of the EU. The reason may be that all the areas in Serbia which are widely corrupted would be revealed by stepping into EU zone. I know that all the states of EU are applying similar laws, regulations or administrations by clearly established rules which are not allowing a huge percentage of corruption.
(Mike, 5 April 2014 11:13)

No doubt there is wide spread corruption in the Serbian government, but it's small time compared to the corruption in the US gov't and EU. You have lobbyists who throw billions and billions of dollars at politicians to vote and legislate a certain way. That's not enough though, the politicians find ways to skim money too. It's all governments, just that right now the EU doesn't have a hand in it so they want 'reforms'.

So the Serbian government does not get criticized by the EU for being corrupt every single day domestically, but if they don't follow the EU on Crimea they are being corrupt?

The EU doesn't want Serbia. These conditions are made to stop Serbia's "progress" towards the EU. It will never happen.

Is this democracy? Sounds like modern day dictatorship. They "push" their agendas on a country, "little by little" and SLOWLY get rid of all opposition forces in a country and setup "puppet" parties. Whereby no matter WHO the people vote for, they end up following the orders of the same masters.

All REAL opposition is arrested, assassinated, discredited, & ignored.

Why is that so important to the EU? Is Serbia an important geo-political ally that it's support is necessary when dealing with international issues? No. It's precisely because it would present a difficult challenge for Serbia to side with the EU's position. The EU doesn't want Serbia to clear too many hurdles because they will never accept Serbia. But the Serbian gov't keeps one-upping the EU by stopping at nothing to get membership. Obviously the politicians will get benefit because of EU membership because it's precisely designed for bureacrats to thrive.

Serbia's position on this matter should be "Western recognition of an independent Kosovo i Metohija opened a Pandora's Box". This was the policy of the Serbian gov't while Kostunica was PM and he was right. South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Crimea, Scotland, Catalonia, Veneto, Republika Srpska and probably more regions will declare independence or already did and history will judge 2008 as what opened the gates to all these declarations.

Just like the countries that don't recognize the independence of Kosovo are irrelevent to Serbia getting in the eu he countries that oppose sanctions are irrelevent to Serbia getting in the eu. One side is willing to block Serbia getting in the eu over its position. Serbia must adapt the position of the pro sanction nation like its adopted pro kosovo independence position with border guards and customs agents ambassador pavicevic and all of Brussels.

There in lies the problem with the EU, and why it's fragile. You are forcing a government, a country, to take your views. It's not even a 100% concise view among all EU countries, just the loud vocal few and the US. Whether or not they agree with you, you tell them they have to take a 'united stand'. And if they don't, then there will be some form of retaliation. It may not be sanctions, or something like that...but say not getting some loan or funds, or some contract, or something along those lines.

I have to wonder, if joining the EU brings everyone into a joint union of 'EQUALS', then who gets to decide what positions you should take? Why should Serbia be pressured to take a view it does not want to? It's a form of bullying that has been going on for over 2 decades now where Serbia is pushed or threatened to go a certain way.

I am always amazed at the power and pull of Germany, the UK, and the US in regards to the EU. France has pull to, but on a second tier and inline with what the US, UK, and Germany say. They pretty much dictate the path and views everyone else should take. Had the US, UK, and GER been against the coup in the Ukraine, then the EU would be supporting the other side. So again, it's an extension of their policies and you have to think like they do, or else. Sounds like a bogus union where you give up your freedoms and do as they say.

These EU wankers really have no shame do they? So you want Serbia to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine, while you illegally bombed Serbia, supported the 2004 pogrom against Serbs (nobody punished), support the current barbed wire ghetto conditions of the Serbian minority in Kosovo, support the ongoing ethnic cleansing of indigenous Serbs in Kosovo, and have done everything in your power to steal a chunk of sovereign Serbian land and reward it to KLA terrorists and organ snatchers?
Go to hell I say, you and the rest of your Fourth Reich EU unelected masters. Thanks to Russia, Kosovo is Serbia and you have failed. Go bark orders to some of our obedient lapdog neighbours, we're not listening.
